Rx7's as an automatic?

Are rx7's with automatic transmission more reliable than manual ones or are they about the same? BTw anybody know 0-60, 1/4 mile, and top speed for automatic rx7? And also can rx7 automatic be modded to like 330 HP and to have same reliability???

And also how much $$ do most of ya spent per year to maintain and take care of your rx7's??

Thanks in advance!

I've put 2k into mine and have only had it for 2 months. I'm just doing reliability mods and changing all the fluids to NEO syn.

um... considering what most people say and such, the average monthly is anywhere from 400-600 monthly to upkeep on the 7. Now about automatics and speed variations from the 5spd, i do not know...

i read in motortrend they do 0-60 in 6.0, with a quarter of 14.5. Top speed 159. this is on a 94 touring model.

400-600 seems pretty high to me. unless you mean putting whatever isnt spent into future rebuilds or mods or something.

Well wont it be easy to make rx7 automatic to go 0-60 in like 5.5 sec or something like if I put $3000 on it. Or is there any other transmission for it since mostly 1993 Rx7's are 4.9 sec 0-60 so I guess automatic transmission in rx7's suck. Maybe putting different one will be better??

Well why do they suck? They're 90% same as manual ones except transmission and its behind 1 sec. Automatic cars are just better for me and not always pay attention to rpm and changing gears. Although I did have 2 manual cars before!

Driving an automatic is like driving a go-kart. They should never put auto trannies in sports cars. It's blasphemy

some of these comments are really helpless...look if you are wondering about the auto consider this:
autos have less likely been abused
you can upgrade the torque converter through a company called Level 10...have a higher stall speed, chirpin tires and it'll be almost if not better than a manual
if you're thinking of doing a conversion with an auto (search forum) it can be relatively expensive
yes they can be modded to 330 hp (350 in fact), but its a little difficult finding someone that will help you tune it...supposedly the new AEM unit and Power FC will also will work with the auto, anymore hp and i'd be wondering how your driving on the road.
to assume that autos just suck is stupid, it depends on your needs...i.e. the local highway here gets easily congested. i'd rather not be tiring my arms out, blah, blah, blah....
the go kart comment is particularly funny considering that the majority of F1 cars use a clutchless paddle shifter
i've spent about 3-4 grand on my 7 (yes an auto) and it kicks plenty of ****
i do plan on getting a conversion done, but that's when i decide to give the car dedicated track duty, after all this car belongs to me and my wife right now

BTW why are these ppl around here so dumb? This is rx7club.com and not rx75spdclub.com, which means automatics are allowed too. lol. Ya are acting like its illegal to have rx7 as automatic or something. lol.

my FD was originally an automatic, and i liked it... then the tranny blew at 40k miles. not under warranty, i was quoted $3200 to fix it, which sounded just insanely high to me, especially after i was told the auto tranny shares many components w/ the mazda MPV minivan (is this true? anyone know?)... so, i got a quote to convert the car to 5sp, and that was only $1800... much more attractive option. and, i can tell you honestly, it was like getting a whole new car. i had never had so much fun driving my FD as i did when it became a 5sp, hands down. another thing to consider, automatic FD's are a *lot* harder to resell, almost all potential FD buyers are going to want a 5sp, something to keep in mind. lastly, when my first 5sp tranny got chewed up, i had it rebuilt (bench-job) for $450... i think that speaks for itself when you look at how muc auto tranny's cost to work on in comparison... just my experience/opinion, hope this helps..

manual rx7's are much more fun, although i have not driven a modded automatic. automatics are potentially more dangerous in the rain, my friend figured that out when he wrapped his vette into a tree. with a 5 spd, u controll when the power goes to the wheels, u controll when the car shifts. A 7 is still a 7 tho....

where did you get it done for $1800?
a friend did it, the labor ran about $900 and we were able to score all the needed parts from a burned FD for another $900... this was about 5 years ago when i did this, i honestly don't know the going rate for the conversion these days, but it is well worth whatever it costs..

actually this is rx75psdclub.com - you'll find that automatics 7's get just about the same treatment here as honda civics do. god help you if you ever want to put a cupholder in the thing: read this thread to see what i mean - https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=119575

if you want to get opinions from people who actually OWN automatic 7's check here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ATFD/

Now to answer your question, I doubt an automatic is any more or less reliable than a manual. The RX-7's reliability reputation stems from the engine itself, not the transmission, and there is zero core difference engine-wise between the two. These cars are getting older by the day, you take your chances with them just like any used car.

automatic trans.

KDR just completed my conversion. Cost 3000.00 but the the car is worth at least 2000.00 more and the fun factor cannot be measured. Without question I would reccomend this conversion and KDR is great
