$9800 Is this FD worth it?

A 93 red R1 $9800. heres what i know about it
Car is in good shape. No accidents. I am the third owner of the car.Car will need a new coat of clearcoat and will need a turbo rebuild. The turbos are leaking oil and the car smokes. Engine is strong. The battery is about 6 months old. All maintenance has been done, also all recalls to the car has been performed. Unfortunately I do not have all the records, I misplaced them when I moved to Fort Lauderdale. Pretty much 95% of all RX-7's have the 3k hesitation, my car does. And yes this car does have the 5th gear sync prob, but it is not bad enough that you have to replace the synchro. Brand new plugs and wires. And it looks like the previous owner changed the AST to aluminum. No upgrades to coils. Car has M2 downpipe, Racing Beat exhaust, K&N filter, eibach springs on 5 way tokico shocks. Car also have no headlight (I sold them) because I have a brand new uninstalled set of EastBear headlights.102k miles on car. brand new act racing clutch installed alogn with a new racing clutch.

am i looking at an engine rebuild here or just a turbo rebuild? also the pics of the paint look really bad. how damaging is the 3000rpm hesitation? what else should i ask the guy. how much am i looking at to fix this car? thx

102K miles, didn't see a rebuild in the history, will need one sooner rather than later, the smoking indicates that it will need one really soon.

R1s did NOT come with clear coat period. I'll bet my life on this (for BB and VR cars). I've had 5 R1s, 3 VR, 1 BB and 1 CYM. If the clear coat is peeling on the car that indicates it has been repainted.

If the 5th gear syncro grinds then it needs to be replaced. The part is only ~$15 from Mazdacomp, 5th gear itself is something around $85. Labor cost depends on where you get it done.

Headlights, well it depends on what you like. If you like the Eastbear then your doing good. If not someone will trade you in a heartbeat.

I'd say $9800 is a little steep for a FD needing an engine and paintjob. Springs, shocks, DP and AST are probably $1000 worth of stuff.

Jeff

He is 100% correct on the 3000 rpm hesitation, every FD I've had has had the hesitation to some degree, usually while warming up. It doesn't hurt anything.

R1 and Base models in 93 didn't come with clear for non-metallic colors, probably a cost issue. 93 Tourings did have clear from the factory for all colors (I've had VR and BB Tourings also).

I'm not sure if they changed for 94 and 95 but I don't think they did. I've got a white 94 FD in the garage now and it doens't have clear on it.

so the smoking problem wouldnt just be the turbos? ive heard these engines can last long if properly maintained, so 102 would seem like that many in that situation, but i know most of the motors go somewhere in the 80k range right?

Well, this one IS falling apart....somewhat. Actually, the engine bay DOES seem to be well kept, but then again, it could have simply been washed. It's certainly a project car, and anyone with $15k in their pocket and some can make this FD look and perform better than an all origiginal low mileage FD that you usually find in the $15-$20k range for a 93.

You know how people are. Some people want a project to start off with and some don't.

I saw pics of it. It is in desperate need of a paintjob. I'd rather drive MY FD around than that pink FD the boy's got

the exhaust blows blue smoke constantly more so at startup and wot though, would this indicate the turbos only or the motor as well?
