Buying a performance clutch and maybe flywheel for my 94

Clutch and Steel Flywheel...

I'm ordering a Clutch and flywheel very soon, most likely today. I will likely get the Bonez Street/Strip or the ACT Street/Strip. I am debating the 17lb steel flywheel. I have done alot of searching, but have not seen much pro and con on the steel flywheel. My use is mostly street, but I plan to go to the track once in a while. I know the aluminum flywheel is bad for the drag strip, anyone know about the steel wheel? You can see my mods in my sig, my purpose is 90 pct street, 10 PCT dragstrip so I need to be comforitable in traffic too. From experience, how is this setup? Any opinions?

Go with the the heavier flywheel if you are not going to be at the track (as in autox and roadracing). I put in the ACT street/strip and love it. Just my 2 cents.

I've got the ACT street/strip with Racing Beat lightened flywheel and love it as well! I haven't been to the track yet, but certainlly plan to visit a few times this summer.

The ACT s/s w/with RB flywheel is totally streetable. Jason @ the RX7 store sells them as a combo.

How much harder of a launch will the 17lb steel wheel be compared to the stock? Also, are the performance gains worth the cost?

I have ruled out the aluminum flywheel. Also I have chosen a vender for the clutch, I am just curious about the steel flywheel and the streetablilty of the Bonez or the Act street/strip.

ACT is extremely streetable. I drive it with no problems what so ever. It is stiff at first (what clutch isn't) but it breaks in good and you are all set. I have the RB 9.5# for track but you will need to get the stock one resurfaced if you keep it for the strip.

I have the Bonez set up on my car, with a re-surfaced stock flywheel. I love it on the street, great pedal feel, excellent performance, and it is strong enough to handle my current and future mods.

Also, while you have it apart, I would suuggest replacing the rear main seal. Mine was leaking pretty good, and you have to remove the clutch and plate assembly to change it, so you might as well do it!

I have the Bonez street performance clutch as well. The disc holds up great and I average at least 15 good hard launches a month at the autox. The disc is wonderful on the steet, but always locks up when I finally step off the clutch at the track.

And like Vintage Red Touring said above, replace the rear main seal whether it's leaking or not. I put a new clutch in shortly after I bought the car and then the seal starting leaking a couple months later. I kicked myself

I have the bonez clutch and Jun 10.3 pound flywheel. Honestly is does change the characteristics of the car, but you will love it. The clutch engages smoothly without to much pressure, and the lighter flywheel although noticeable is isn't that bad even on stop and go on an up hill.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm not going to order today, but I am going to soon. I **think** I will go with the Bonez street performance clutch and the steel 17 lb flywheel. I think the real light flywheels are not going to be good for me. With the 17, I should get some benefits of the light wheel and still be able to drag without having to launch at 9000 RPM like a S2000, lol. Also thanks for the input about the seal, I will have that replaced while its apart.

im about to get a clutch and flywheel too. ive already decided on the act s/s clutch but im still debating on which flywheel to get... do the aluminum ones wear faster than the light steel? can u replace the friction surface on the aluminum ones?

im leaning towards nocabs setup since i admire him so much for beatin that saleen
12lbs with counterweight seems pretty good for the rb fw

i have a bonez street strip clutch and 9.5lb flywheel and i love it............streetability is not compromised much.......some say to stay with a heaiver flywheel so you don't fall out of boost but i haven't noticed, but i have a short shift also, which you must have with a lightned flywheel...

I know the aluminum flywheel that srmotorsports sells has a surface that can be replaced. I have been more than pleased with the setup.
