Rotary aviation OMP adaptor - smoke on start

I've got a 13B REW (Mikuni OMP) with a RA OMP Adaptor taking castor oil (Castrol R30) from an oil tank (about the same level as the oil injectors).

If I leave the car sit for about 5 days and then start it, I'm getting lots of smoke on start (clears within 5 to 10 secs). The smoke smell is from castor.

Have a Haltech (Elite 2500), the OMP map is set to 0 delivery at 0 RPM. After I stop the engine, I turn the ignition on for 5 secs to try and help the OMP reset to 0). Even when doing this, when I start it again after an extended period, getting lots of castor smoke on startup.

Anyone else have the same experience when using the RA OPM adaptor?

I'm doing the same with the RA OMP adapter on both my FC (AEM Infinity ECU) and my FD (Link G4+ ECU). On my FC, I have my tank just above the RA OMP adapter & OMP where the air pump used to live, it's a 2 quart capacity tank. So it's a little higher than the oil injectors. With my FC, I've found that when the car is stored for a lengthy period of time, like 1 week or more, I'll have the same smokey starts you're describing. If it's only a day or two between drives, I don't have a smokey start up. I've concluded that the oil from the tank is slowly siphoning into the motor while the car is sitting in storage. So I added a shut off ball valve on the oil tank supply line that I close whenever the car is stored for any lengthy time, and the problem went away.

Oddly enough, I don't have the same problem with my FD, and the only real difference is the tank size, its location and a longer oil supply plumbing run. In my FD, the tank is about 1 quart, located where the ABS pump used to live (USDM FD). Tank is still a little higher than the oil injectors, but it's 1/2 the capacity of the one in my FC and a significantly longer plumbing run to the RA OMP adapter.

Thanks for the response Pete - good to know I'm not alone. As a test, this weekend I've temporarily blocked the OMP oil outputs and am premixing. After 5 to 7 days sitting, I'm seeing a LOT of smoke. I'm just making sure that it's all due to the OMP, and I don't have some other issue.

I used to have my OMP tank in the same location (near the ABS pump), but moved it much lower (just infont of my airpump actually) to try and reduce the effect of gravity effect (no luck).

It does indeed seem that despite the OMP being a pump, and the needle metering valve being closed, Mazda allowed for a minimum oil flow to the oil injectors. Not a problem when the engine is not running (no oil present for the OMP to ingest), however with the OMP adaptor and a tank, it continues to deliver oil to the oil injectors. Sounds like I'm going to need a soledoid valve or similar (I'll need to get something that provides feedback when the value really is open, and use an input on the ECU for it).

I was going to suggest that it’s likely gravity flowing from the tank as well.

Obviously the factory system isn’t going to have that issue with the oil sump down under the engine.

a solenoid will need a safety circuit to prevent the engine from running if it’s not open due to failure etc.
