Proposed import tariffs
Haven’t seen this mentioned elsewhere but this would impact us considerably...

Well..the lock isn’t in yet. Think the deadline to submit comments has passed but we can complain to our representatives. My congressman occasionally comes to cigar club meetings. If I see an opening I might do some polite bitchin’. There’s a couple other car-guys in the group too.

What I am most surprised about is that no one seems to ask the simple question of “why the tariffs” and are they justified?
It’s fairly simple to me and I had hoped the media would spell it out for the American people... but that would make too much sense and folks just want to bitch about what it may mean in the short term regarding imported goods.
There is a principle here and it’s that our Goods are being hit with unfair and unequal tariffs from other countries. Ones who basically finance their socialist agendas on the taxes they collect.
Considering we have free trade agreements with several countries who do not honor the spirit of that agreement and have large tariffs on our goods to protect their own national interests and keep our companies from being able to compete on an equal playing field. We are at a disadvantage and it’s our governments responsibility to do something about it.
Its not Donald Trump you should be directing your angst. It’s the countries who aren’t allowing Americans to be competitive due to their own protectionist policies. We have the power to do something about it but the media seems to side with those who are not Americans instead. We aren’t even asking for an advantage; which would seem like a “No-brainer” somehow the narrative I am hearing is that Tarriffs are bad... ok. Then send the message to these other countries. Drop the Tarriffs on our Goods!

If you’re talking new cars, aftermarket and repo parts I don’t necessarily disagree. But I’m not seeing tariffs on used parts and vehicles doing much to protect domestic industries.
Would this be the point we drive home to the powers that be? This is coming from an Importer of JDM cars. Mainly we want to distinguish that the 25+ year rule with the 2.5% tax, is truly used for enjoyment of classic cars and parts. As opposed to circumventing the traditional US car buying process and how it supports the US- US Dealership, new or used US vehicles (dodge, honda etc.), financing of those cars (banks), US based manufacturing plants etc. There is so much that is on the line with these transactions for both countries if there is a disruption. All the way from the seller of their car in Japan, to all the auction workers, the people who load them, the service providers in Japan, the Shipping liners, the port workers, the CBP, the terminal operators, twic workers, local taxes that get paid to taxation, dmv and taxes in Japan. Plus what it supports here in the US with this industry. This is critical as the vehicles we have all been waiting for are just now becoming available.
Trucks are already taxed at the 25% mark to deter people from going overseas and buying cheap used trucks and equipment, mainly work vehicles- Yellow and Green iron, delivery etc. sorts of stuff.
This wouldn't be a cheaper alternative/circumvention for the average citizen, when it comes time to buy a new car. Is that the blanket thought process on why it would be raised to 25%, and them reaching out is an opportunity to learn that this would do more harm than good? If it has to go up why not 10% then or something reasonable?
Please don't sh*t on this thread and get it locked.

In the end I think these Tarriffs will go away on both sides if in fact they were one sided as I suspect they were...
