That's quite a big RHD penalty. At least 50%.

Market clearing price in Canada.

Actually almost the highest price for an RHD in North America.

I think it might be a model year Australians can't grab.

Or we may have never seen it here.

That car is a very clean example.

But you would want to be certain of its provenance.

This is eligible for import in Australia without restriction under our 25 year rule. But this is big money for a 94 JDM model - much more than what you'd pay in Japan. A friend of mine just got a silver 2002 model with the same mileage for a fair bit less. Of course, you need to factor in import costs, duties and taxes etc, but I assume those are fairly low to import into the US? We pay 10% sales tax, then an additional 33% luxury car tax for every dollar over A$69,000 (USD48,000) inclusive of shipping and taxes (ie you pay a tax on top of a tax).

Anyone have any insight on the r1 current on BAT? Certain area's of the car are super clean where as others are wtf?

Completely mangled pinch welds, scraped up frame rails, and looks like someone missed with the floor jack:
https://bringatrailer.com/wp-content...it=2048%2C1365

Missing both rear wheel plastic spoilers that sit in front of the wheels.

It was just purchased on carsandbids.com which I noticed the rear brake shields have very nice condition part stickers on them, which in my mind would indicate low mileage. However those shields looking soo new do not match the patina of the rest of the suspension. Passenger rear cam bolt for alignment is way off, yet they all look brand new.
https://carsandbids.com/auctions/3o1...993-mazda-rx-7

Car is tempting, just a ton of wait, what is going on here?

I think that's why a 1 owner car is a selling point. Some people take care of cars, some don't. This one spent time with someone that didn't.

Those are the absolute worst pinch welds I've ever seen, someone had to try pretty damn hard to make that happen. Wow.

I had the same thought on those pinch rails.....hard to believe that's an 18K mile car....usually takes 218K miles of jacking abuse to do that much damage.

I'd say it was autocrossed each and every weekend LOL. Yep pinch wells are completely destroyed and the only thing I can imagine is someone was switching the wheels A LOT! This would also explain the rear wheel spoilers being damaged and consequently removed.

The dent was from a jack stand someone probably forgot to remove when lowering the car. In other words this car was jacked up and down a 100 plus times.

I'd guess the trans and engine are a bit worn for the mileage as well.

That said, who knows if it's a good car or not but it will likely sell for over 70k and everyone will congratulate the lucky buyer LOL

Did not hit the reserve at 57k. Is the market cooling off or did potential bidders notice the oddities as well?

Now, where is a unicorn 94/95 Montego Blue base?!

It seems there has been a slowing in the quantity of FDs posted to BaT. I'm guessing the initial run up in price that started around 2019 brought a lot of cars out of the woodwork, but we're now seeing a slowing in the quantity of available cars.

Seems to me the dealer that was selling it had very unreasonable expectations. $57k for a RED 93 that is questionable is a damn good price.

I'd also love a 94/95 mb base. That said this isn't the time to buy anything. China's a mess, war, lingering c19 bs, interest rates rising, QE tightening, etc...etc... I suspect 2023 is going to be painful and there will be deals across the board. This seller may regret not unloading at 57k.

I agree it seems the sellers are sold out and lots of keepers remaining. However if one becomes unemployed etc... then keepers become sellers.

Given the fragile economy I agree. In my view I don't see prices moving much higher and more than likely they will come back down to earth for a bit.

This one just hit BaT:
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...omments-anchor

One-owner car but not well kept. New motor and 99-spec turbos, but accident history, repaint (that'll need to be done again) and just really poorly presented. Is it just dirty or is it scuffs/scratches/damage? Hard to know for sure but I'm betting it's the latter. Already at $32K....

All those years when FDs were $12k cars have taken their toll. What we see on BaT is simply the quality of cars that are left. The true mint examples are few and far between. I would know, I looked for one for a long time, and it took 2+ years of constant searching to find one.

Yeah, I agree. It's just hard for me to understand how you can buy such a beautiful car and not take care of it. If this one had passed thru 4 or 5 owners it would be one thing, but at one time this owner drove out of a dealership with a spanking new FD, this very car. And look at it today - I just don't get it.

I'll just leave this here. Lots of collectors are awaiting for the 25 year rule hoping that value will jump when US buyers can get access to 2002 models. The jump has happened on its own and I'm not convinced US buyers will be interested in these models in 2027, especially if price trajectory continues.

Spirit R values are perplexing as it was not a genuine separate performance model, but just a trim package with some limited edition badging and special paint colors, with most of the changes being bolt-ons that were available on other trim levels.

Aesthetically, I don't think Mazda ever improved the FD from the original design, and early models are the most desirable to me, that seems to be a minority opinion though.

The pinnacle of the FD was the RX-7 SP homologation special (which actually did feature more power, unlike the Spirit R) or an early JDM Type RZ with the kevlar seats, IMO. Like this:

Love the base MB but this isn't the one to buy. I can't believe it wasn't a total loss, very bad accident.

All I can say is this is the craziest car market in history or just one more MASSIVE bubble waiting to pop.

I agree.
Imagine selling your FD right now for 50K then trying to something to replace it with.
