I think the CYM contributed $10k to $15k to the price tag on that one.

Nice, didn't notice that red one. I think they'll both cross $40k.

You're kidding right? I assume so lol. It's pretty much impossible to touch an FD for under $15k, and those are the REALLY terrible condition ones. There just are not a whole lot of these cars for sale anymore. Don't get me wrong, that car is definitely not my "taste" so to speak, and I certainly see a lot of things left to finish, but if the motor is in decent shape (compression wise) I bet it goes for around $20k. I could also be completely wrong, but prices seem to keep climbing quite a bit every year even on the ugly examples.

If you want to see how a car was really treated and cared for, look at the engine bay. This car has neglect all over it. It may sell for 20K who knows, but who ever buys it for that for that much money isn't very smart. Because in the end, they will end up spending as much ( quite possibly more) than if they would if they had gone with a much lower mileage and better taken cared of example.

Seriously there are a lot of things that point how well (or not) this car was taken cared of. Never mind the missing map pocket and trunk lid or even the dirty interior, but who would place a subwoofer like that? Its very telling. People who do that that typically don't make the best decisions when it comes to modifications. As an example:

Super dirty engine with a rusty looking single turbo, with the stock IC and also missing the duct??? WTF...

Rusty and banged up oil pan???

That car is easily $20k. I don't like the kit it has on, or the single turbo to stock intercooler, but you just can't find one any better than this for under $20k. Might even go higher than that.

I guess will see but i will admit I don't keep up with everything that relates to FD pricing, so its very likely that I am really off on this one. With that said, my logic is simple with this car:
  • High mileage at 134K
  • Body modifications & not the most desirable ones either
  • Interior pieces missing
  • Engine bay in terrible shape showing neglect
  • Questionable modifications
Given all of that and taking into account that much better condition FDs with 40-60K less miles can be had in the mid to high 20's, it really is not the best decision buy this for $20K. At the same time, I have just looked at BAT and nothing has sold for less than 20K this year

Don't get me wrong- I want the prices for these cars to continue to go up. As finally these cars are being appreciated for what they are.

My opinion is there are 3 ways to get an FD under $20k (unless you just get lucky).

a blown engine or a roller, auto transmission, with decent body, other areas also needing work (tired suspension, transmission issues).

Major paint and body work (e.g. dented panels), poor body kit, mismatched paint, etc...

a salvage title

If I could find a mechanically sound car, manual transmission, full interior, clean title, under 100k miles, that just needs paint for under $20k, I'd buy it.

The Perfect FD

This VR touring is going to hit the $40k mark easily, it looks straight out of the 1993 Mazda brochure. So beautiful, it belongs in Jay Leno's garage.
I'm definitely watching this one, wonder where it was hiding and where it will hide for the next 20 years.

I wonder if the circuit boards for the Bose Acoustic Wave system have been redone?

I don't necessarily disagree with your criticisms of the car by the way, I just think it is damn near impossible to find an FD for under $20k unless they have a lot of the problems TwinCharged mentioned. Prices have just gone WAY up over the past, I'd say 3 years, for sure. There are also a lot less of them available it seems. I've also noticed a fairly big uptake in YouTubers starting to recognize them for what they are and turn out (sometimes quite questionable like that K swap) project car videos. This in turn leads even more people to want the few left and push prices up even further. I'm also not complaining though since I've already got one : ) I would be kinda ticked off if I was in the market for one right now though.

TwinCharged,

You pretty much described my 93. It was a blown motor auto car with a shot interior that I STILL paid $7,800 for back in 2015. Certainly not the best deal around, but it was really difficult finding a base/R1 Brilliant Black car even somewhat local so I went for it. I've since put at least another $8k in it, and there are plenty of finishing touches left. That said, it runs and drives pretty great (I really need to update my build thread) and I literally can't take it out for 10 minutes without getting multiple people wanting to race me and tell me how cool it is. I've never had a car get this much attention, so it makes sense how pricey these cars are getting. You RARELY see them, and even the guy "who knows a guy who owns an FD" ... chances are it doesn't run.

Won't be surprised at all.

The car market is going crazy. Dollar diving off a cliff, stock market w/ stupid valuations during a major recession/pandemic, no interest anywhere etc...etc.. I'll say 33k BB r1 and 37,500 VR touring. R1 has some rust and some miles, the other is well a VR/tan 93 touring. If 94 VR/black touring easily 40k.

That rust is probably from water getting in through the antenna. Probably needs a new quarter panel and possible more. Personally that's one I'd take a hard pass on. I can't believe I considered selling my low mileage R2 for 38k recently.

I can't decide if I should buy a nice collector car before they go up another 100 percent or wait out this madness.

How much lower would an RHD model be typically priced relative to an identical American model?

Hmmmmm 15-20% less, unless it's a spirit R or SP. Those specific models would bring some sort of premium.

I would say "equivalent" rather than "identical". In the recent past , basic RHD would be less than half an equivalent LHD, in Canada. Maybe its improved to 60%? I would guess, there probably isn't enough data points yet for RHD in the US.

In Canada, prices for both have improved dramatically, with RHD selling for LHD prices of just a few years ago. And current LHD prices are leading the market much higher.

Prices in Australia for RHD are likely at current US LHD levels or higher , even for basic models, such as the Type RB.
