Fd exhaust identification

I came across this Downpipe back exhaust set up that’s local to me. It’s a stainless system. I know the high flow cat is a knightsports . https://www.rhdjapan.com/knight-spor...uki-kouki.html I’m just not totally sure what the cat back is. It appears to have a insert in the tail pipe that’s removable. I vaguely remember the oval end plate from a thread long ago. Despite my days of searching I haven’t been able to find something other than a twin tip knightsports that matches this. Could this be a single tip version of that?

Here’s the pic from the “ rare parts defined thread” some years back.

Yep that's a Knightsports cat-back and high flow cat. Nice setup there. Some cleaning and polishing and it would look brand new.

That muffler is probably on the quieter side but will sound good.

We must of seen the same one on there. It’s definitely a knightsports cat… Long discontinued. The muffler has a JASMA tag on it.

Dale, I was hoping a exhaust connoisseur like you would know. Price was right so I took a chance. It will go nicely with my KS twin tube dp as a complete set. I plan on polishing it back up. Thanks for the info!

For cleaning it up, this is my new favorite trick -

It gets the brown tinge out of stainless. Stuff stinks like hell but BOY does it work and work fast.

I found Ospho available from Amazon then put it in a Home Depot spray bottle to work with.

Dale,

That’s pretty nice. His reaction is priceless. Doing that step first to get the trash out of it prior to the buffing wheel will save me a ton of time and rouge. After I get this cleaned up, I’ll post some pictures of the complete KS exhaust system.

For further searchers, this thread has some identification numbers for the jasma tag. Post #7 gives a list.

It took some definite elbow grease, but I’ve got the cat back portion all cleaned and shined up. The setscrew was actually an add on tip that made it look squared and round. Underneath was a nice curved tailpipe, which I much prefer. Very similar style to my ganador vertex. Next up will be the high flow cat.

What techniques did you use to polish it up?

Also why is it not on your car yet?

Dale, firstly thanks for the heads up about ospho. I didn’t have quite the luck the guys from the video had with it. On parts that were already polished it seems to do a pretty great job removing the brown tinge. The tip and the can it made a decent difference. On the piping it barely did anything. The piping has this Leopard spot look in places as did the piping that connected the tip to the can. So I used OSPHO in a spray bottle and coated the piping, then began sanding. The piping received 220 grit, then 400, to 1200, to 2500. I kept the area I was working with wet. It started coming off very easily then. I did this on all the piping and when I reached 1200 grit I did the actual muffler and the tip. All this was done while keeping it wet. I then proceeded to take 0000 steel wool and rubbed the complete assembly to create a uniform appearance. The final step was taking hand polish and polishing until you get the desired result. I left the piping more matte finish and highly polished the can and tip. I plan to do the high flow cat assembly next as time allows.

I haven't installed this yet because this is going on my other fd, the bnr twins car that I’m restoring this winter. I have to take off my early model greddy sp cat back that’s currently on the car. I’m still waiting to receive my ks twin tube dp back from jet hot. They seem to be running behind on the extreme 2500 coating. That and I’m spending a fair amount of time in the mountains enjoying my snowboard

Finished up the cat today. I remade two of the missing air tube block off plates outta some spare stainless plate I had laying around. It does have a couple dings and some scratching here and there but all and all I’m pretty happy with the results. Shame you won’t see it underneath the car, but I know it’s there.

I’m quite surprised. It sure did clean up pretty well considering the age. When I get some time I’m gonna switch out the catbacks and take some pictures. I like that the tip isn’t huge. Whenever I get the rest of my stuff from Mazda ( eight months and counting ) I plan on doing a short video of the sound as well.

Side by side of the greddy exhaust that came off the car and the ks going on. Plus a few of it installed. Definitely a unique look.

I received my twin tube downpipe back from Jet hot. Great company to deal with. I went with their 2500 degree extreme coating. Unfortunately when they blasted the surface for prep, it uncovered a pinhole where the twin tubes meet at the collector. That and the flange where it mounts to the turbo had a very small pencil eraser size chip. Judging by how extremely well it was packed it must’ve been done prior to shipment. They did not catch the chip or pinhole prior to coating. A quick email about my issue and within 45 minutes I had a return shipping label from them. Luckily I repaired the pinhole from the inside without damage to the coating on the outside but they recoated the whole pipe and had it back to me within the week.
It looks like I’ve stumbled across the complete knightsports exhaust by accident. Here’s to local importers that don’t know what they’re selling. Couple pics of all three pieces. Enjoy!

Jet-Hot is great to work with and their coating is fantastic. I got mine coated in a blue color 2000 degree coating and 10-12 years later it still looks EXACTLY like it did when I got it. No discoloration, chipping, flaking, nothing.

It’s definitely an unusual set up. I didn’t even know it existed until I stumbled across it.

That’s great news, hopefully this holds up well long-term. It does carry a lifetime warranty which is a bonus. I was very impressed with their attentiveness and customer service.

If it's possible to lower the tip a half inch or so, your bumper will thank you later.

There’s not any drivetrain in the car at this point. So the front mounting point is just hanging causing it to tip up some. I really dislike the burnt rear valance too
