Anyone seen this before?

This is a "Cat delete pipe" that I purchased some time ago. I just overheated the stock cat so I replaced it with this, until I can get a good hi flow cat.

This is with the heat shield I made

As you can see this is split into two paths with a resonator in each path.
I have never seen one like this and was wondering if the group had any information on it.

I am considering purchasing two high flow cats to replace the resonators and have them welded in by my local welding shop, any comments or suggestions?

Thanks

I have one of those and it's a tank. AFAK it's a PFS resonated midpipe. Probably weighs as much as the stock midcat lol.

However it could last a century

It is a a tank, not quite as heavy as the stock Cat but more than half. :-) Your saying it is made by PFS? OK thanks, it works well, it is heavy duty.

It looks like you could swap over the original heat shield and pass visual smog.

No, you can't use the original heat shield. With some modification you can get it to fit over the pipe but you would have to cut it. And then you need weld on mounting points for the bolts that hold the heat shield to the pipe. The one I made works very well, doesn't rattle and I think there is less heat getting past the shield. It is several layers with air spaces.

Nice work, good thinking.

I've had a few plugged 'cats here and there and....I just have taken a steel rod and knocked out the substrate, essentially creating an open unit.

Only if the mechanic was deaf and had a sinus infection.

Thanks for the info, I am happy with it. It is fairly quiet and fits perfect. I was thinking of having some Stainless steal Cats welded in place of the resonators, but now I think I will just take it out and have a dupe made with the stainless cats, depending on the cost. I do think it is good to run the main cat, so I want a high flow one. I think two big cats in a set up like this would flow nicely.

I'd like to hear it go through the hrbt or the bay bridge tunnels. I used to love gassing it through those tunnels with the windows down.

Does anyone know what the purpose of the heat shield is?? Is it literally to shield heat?? lol

Or is it to protect the catalyst from getting hit from debris when you drive on the road etc etc??

Cause my shield came off today while driving.

This middle section came off.

I heard it scrapping when i came off the highway but i was too far from home, i thought i could make it back but i guess it came off while going home and who knows where it is now lol.

I think it's primarily to improve warmup time and secondarily to reduce heat channeling up into the trans tunnel.

The stock design is not impressive to me: the clips that the outer heat shield attach to rust off and break loose. Mine made a squeaking noise for a while as the clips disintegrated and let go.

Yeah that pic is of my new "used" cat that i never had a chance to put on and looking at it, that shield is held by bendable clips.

I guess after all these years of driving, it finally let go.

I thought they were held by screws or rivets. And it got me wondering cause my suspension is soo terrible, i thought all those years of driving with the harsh ride, made those screws or rivets come off lol

And going home today i thought my car was falling apart lol. Thank god it was only held by those clips.

I need to put in that stock cat asap now.

I think the heat shield is to keep heat out of the passenger compartment and to keep the tunnel from getting hot I think you will notice some extra heat in the passenger compartment, that's why I worked at making a heat shield, with lots of dead air space, I think the passenger compartment is cooler than it was with the stock cat and heat shield. Since I live in VA we have lots of hot weather, when the weather is normal. :-)
