Flood Damage

I have a 93 touring with only 28,000 original miles. This last June while I was stuck in San Francisco my car was in Houston when Tropical Storm Allison struck. My RX was flooded to the seats. Since then I have had it repaired and it seems to be running like normal. My question to all you enthusiasts is there anything I need to watch for during the next year (suplimental claim period for insurance) that might be an after affect of having been flooded?? The repairs were made at Jeff Haas Mazda in Houston.

Thanks,
mkahanek

Hey , This happened to me too, unfortunatly my insurance pimped me and I wound up having to fix it myself. I removed the entire interior i.e., seats, carpet, console, DASH (what a pain in the ****), while I had all the interior out I completly lined the car with Dynamat sound proofing, doors too. Now my car is as quiet as a BMW! It's freakin awesome! As far as any damage to look for, me thinks as long as the ECU wasn't submerged you should be OK. There is nothing under the seats other than the EGT probe and I don't thonk is affected by a short dousing of water. Did they change your carpet? The foam rubber under the floorboards is like 3" thick, holds a lot of water. My Insurance was going to leave the car for 3-4 weeks before even attempting any repars, I thought the mold and mildew build-up would ruin the car, so I took a utility knife and went at her! Then they said they wouldn't take out the dash, just stuff the new carpet under as far as you could see. HOW LAME! I wanted that **** done right.....oh well, the long and short is I did it myself. I don't think I would do it again, but the Dynamat was worth it, even if it did add 40 lbs. car-wide. But, my ECU didnt get wet either....did yours?

The dealer replaced the computer under the passenger seat and some exhaust heat sensor. They did not replace the carpet. They shampoo'd it. They did replace the padding however. The deaaler stated that the carpet would not stink, that it was the padding that got smelly. So far it has not stunk. It does not have that new car leather smell that it did before the flood. I was more worried about engine components that could have been affected.. Also underbody stuff.

Interesting... because there is no computer under either seat, NONE, and the padding is bonded to the carpet....sounds like the dealer snowed ya....there is a TON of sponge under that carpet, I thought it would be impossible to get it completly dry so I pulled it out. And A dehumidifier wont work either because there is a vapor barrier between the carpet pile and the sponge, water could still be in there and you wouldn't know it. You may want to check that out, insurance companies and dealerships get lazy, if ya know what I mean. It was a lot of work changing the carpet, at first the body was going to simply put fans on it. HA HA HA that would of never worked, thus I had a screaming match with my insurance company. In the end I got new carpet, but yours truly had to change it. Sucked... but now the car car smells like new.

Where did you install the Dynamat? I've heard it's phenomenal stuff and can knock down tire noise, etc. by 10 db - that's ALOT of sound reduction!

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. Good that your car is running though! THe ECU is at the same 'altitude' as the seats, behind the passenger kick panel, so if you seats got wet - the ecu did too.

We 'barely' got any rain on the SW side. (whew!)

I used two Dynamat trunk kits, each came with 4 sheets each of regular, premium, and xtreme. I used the xtreme on the doors, the regular in the floorboards, and premium everywhere else (B-pillars, rear and hatch areas) The sound reduction is great, not only does it make the stereo sound more efficiant, and the sound from the body shuddering over bumbs has completly gone away. All suspension noise has been eliminated, highway drone gone. I wanted to have that stealthy feel to the car and I achieved it. Like when you close the doors, it's very tight, like a BMW! I thought with the weight I saved with a downpipe I cold easily afford some extra weight in soundproofing. However I didn't cover the firewall, some sounds are better than others!

Cool! On my list of must does, I've been thinking about this for a long time and how to do it, and this seems like a no brainer (perfect for me):p I've always felt that solid feel is one of the things an FD was really lacking......
