wtf is that smell!?

sooo... my shift boot is cracked/hole in it... i'm guessing i'm smelling the transmission?? or could that actually be some oil from the tranny burning, and coming into the cabin. or... could it just be the tranny smells really bad and it would come into the cabin even if i had a new boot. (i'm not burning the clutch btw) also. if i do get a new boot. does it have to be a specific size or anything? o.0. and does anyone know where i can get a shift **** that actually screws on like the stock, and not those retarded three screws that dig into the thread to hold it on?

Which boot are you talking about? The outer boot or the inner rubber boots?

As for shift *****, a lot of mazda ***** are interchangeable. Ive had an RX8 shift **** and the one I have now is from a miata. Just need to check your thread pitch. S4 and S5's are like 2mm difference I think. I forget.

If it smells sort of like sulphur, then it's transmission fluid.

Burning oil has sort of a strong bitter smell to it.

get a video camera and record the smell then post it here :P

you could try smelling a little exhaust, then a little trans fluid, then some other assorted fluids, then determine which one(s) it most smells like.

hmm true... oh and for the shiftboot it's the outer shift boot. can i just get any shift boot? or does it have to be one rx7 specific. LOL. or do they come in certain sizes or something. LOL super gay question, but i don't wanna drop how much they cost for something i can't put on/return. yanno?

you might just be smelling grease, too... is there a particular time/moment when it smells real strong or is it pretty constant?

when i rev it up pretty high in any gear the smell comes in pretty strong. comes in thru the shift boot. and it gets really hot under the shift boot. i'm really hoping it's not cause of low tranny oil cause it's leaked out. but i don't see stains of oil under my car in the morning.

Are the stock exhaust heat shields in place? If they were removed, the underside of the car will become extremely hot and you may smell the undercoating burning.

The heat and smell thing is normal with ripped/missing shifter boots on these cars.
