87 cars don't store codes. If it blinks, its broke. The wiring must be broken if its a new sensor. Ohmn out the wires b/t the ECU and water thermo sensor.
Uh. You did change the water thermo sensor, not the water temp sensor. Right. Oh course right.

Could be the wiring then - to check this measure the resistance at the ECU end of the cable - across pins 2I and 2C. You should see about 16k ohm to 300 ohm (cold to hot).

Live and learn. Not a biggie. The water thermo switch is on the backside of the waterpump housing. Sort of squarish looking and mines sort of green/blue in color. Before replacing, take a look and make sure its on good. Then look in the plug and see if a socket is pushed back in the plug. IF all looks ok, reinstall it, start the car and see if the code is still blinking. IF it is, then do what Henrik said. Go to the ECU and unplug the Middle connector and ohm out the two wires he mentioned. If you need a pic of the plug and how they number/letter the plugs just yell. I can't attach anything right now. At the rock quarry busting biguns into littleuns.

I wasnt sure myself readin this, so I went and looked in the FSM. Its states:
"Water Temperature Switch" - Its the one on the radiator. (I think it controls more fuel on cold start idle right??)
"Water Thermo Sensor" - FSM shows it to be on water pump housing.
Thats about all I could find

The three short dashes followed by a long pause......indicate Water Thermo Sensor. http://home.rmci.net/panther/86_88ecu.htm
The water temp switch is on the bottom left on the radiator. Helps determine how the accelerated warm up system works on a 86-88.

Is it the one on the "topside" of the filler neck (just a 1 pin lug connector) or the one on the "backside" of the filler neck (with 2 pin injector style connector). The right one is the one on the backside. The top one is just for the aux. electric fan.

Here is a really big pic of my engine bay. You can see the aux fan pin really easy. Has kinda a red color on it:

Well, I think it's obvious you replaced the water thermo sensor. On my car the connector was pretty beat up and the wires were pulled out, I had to stick them back inside the connector and glue them there and then stick the connector back on for it to work.
