buying a 89 s5

1989 s5(white with white 10th AE style wheels and spoiler) with 130k miles low compression, with no problems in its past very good record, runs very strong. its a GTU model with lots of t2 parts including seats sway bars, etc. the asking price is 1800, is it worth it?

also, its not in the greatest condition, but the frame is straight, the interior is OK, and the body panels are in decent shape

doesn't sound like an exceptional price but if it is worth it to you then go for it. keep in mind it will likely need a rebuild in the near future if it is the original engine.

hmm, i plan on keeping it for about 15k miles, is there a chance it would last that long? my guess is YES but im unexperienced... also what would resale be on this car(S5 gtu) with a straight frame in decent conditino with a blown motor be?

-edit- it is the original engine, but the owner is a car enthusiast who knows how to take care of rotarys.

hmm, kind of a gamble considering i plan on buying it for a first car and 1800 bucks is a lot for me, and it could blow at anytime, and i obviously cannot afford a 5000 dollar rebuild(i can afford to do minor things because i have access to multiple perfectly running cars) so if i were to resell it for 500 bucks that could be a 1300 dollar loss

I personally would walk away at anything over $8-900. Doesn't sound like it's in too good of shape. But then again, I'm a tightass on purchase and put way too much into repairs.

What can you lose by offering less? And what TII parts are they? Since some may not help you. Offer $1,200 if you don't do a compression check.

won't cost $5000 for a rebuild, i can probably build an n/a for around $1200 including a core then you'd need a few things to replace like hoses, belts, fuel filter, vacuum lines, installation gaskets, fluids, clutch, etc. which would be about another $500 max.

i would probably offer $1000 depending on what parts came with the car.

hmm i'll check for all of them, but the only i can remember right now are some drivetrain parts, the Strut bars and mounts, seats and some interior stuff.
basically if it wouldnt be rediculously crazy to try to sell the car with blown apex seals or something for at least 700 bucks i wouldnt mind paying 1800 for a year or so of use.

The compression is good and there seems to be no problems, im going to check it out throughly next weekend. Also, do any of you guys know of any rotary shops at all in southern california?

If compression is good I think it may be worth it, did you see the numbers yourself? PS: Some of the driveline parts, LSD, driveshaft, or anything to do really with the driveline, won't help you out much FYI.

you can have low compression but have a strong feel about the engine still. rotaries are not exactly high compression engines in the first place.

but low compression does lead to bad tendencies like easily flooding out and failing emissions.

well anyways this is what i've heard, in fact the guy didnt list it for sale or nothing he's just a neighbor and he has a few cars and i just saw it sitting there so one day i just walked up and knocked on his door and asked him it if was for sale, he was kind of attatched to it so he needed about a week to think about it. anyway i hammered him with quesitons...and he knew about taking care of rotarys and stuff, its a pretty well taken care of car. hes a very honest guy and he knew his stuff and he's not trying to rip me off or anything because he drives an 8 series bimmer as well so 1600 bucks or whatever isnt much to him. i actualy plan on just taking the car to a rotary shop, paying them to inspect it and stuff, but i am taking his word for it in terms of the compression and stuff as of right now, and i plan on doing a test drive as well just to get a feel of it and see how the engine and tranny is.
