Worth it?

Hi everyone. I have a question for you all. I have a 89 gtu fc. Its a great car, and goes great. there is no rust on the car and the motor runs awesome. It does however need something done to the tranny. Not sure what, i know it needs a new clutch, but it might need a couple transmition barens as well. the suspension on the car is rock solid, and is great to drift. is it worth fixing the tranny so it runs mint?

A tranny from an 86-88 NA might fit and can be bought and shipped off Ebay for around 3-500 bucks. The clutch will cost you around 150, and it would take a long day's work if you have never done an FC clutch / tranny swap before.

Is 500 bucks and a day's work worth it to you? _That is the question_.

I don't need a new tranny... i just need a clutch, and maybe a bearing in the tranny......well maybe you could tell me what it is. When the clutch is in i get no noises, but when i let it out you can here a grinding noise or maybe wining. once i take off you don't realy hear it till about 4 and 5 gear then its really bad...what could it be? throught bearing? all info would be great...

Before I replaced my clutch when the clutch was engaged I got a whining at idle speeds. If I pushed the pedal in it went away until about halfway through 4th gear. The symptoms were very similar to yours. Replaced the pilot bearing, clutch disc and pressure plate, and the throwout bearing and the whining disappeared.

Ok well while I am right herei should also ask the other question. I have decided to keep the fc. Now it is up to me to do all the decision making. sould i buy a regular clutch or should i go with aftermarket? yes i am gonna be doing some street racing, and defantly alot of drifting...and i am not the best mecanic and never ripped out a transmition before, but should i do it myself or just have someone do it for me??

well if you have a manual (haynes or w/e) and are i guess somewhat mechanically inclined and if you have a (i think it's a 4" socket, correct me if i'm wrong ppl.!) for the clutch then go right ahead.. if the idea of changing the tranny intimidates to and you think you probably don't have all the tools and time i guess spend the extra money getting someone you trust to do it right

2 and 1/8 inch socket if you are referring to the flywheel nut. Everything else is 10mm, 14mm and I think a few 12mm somewhere (?).

go for it, i dont' know how many times i've dived into a project headfirst not knowing what to expect, just take your time and double check everything before you attempt it. you'll come out of it knowing more and feeling proud becuase you did it all yourself
