Question Is It Worth It?

I'm looking at this RX-7: http://autotrader.com/findacar/vdeta...lor=&cardist=4

Seems like a real good price. I like everything about it besides that it's an automatic, and I'm wondering how much it is on average (parts and labor combined) to swap in a standard transmission. I wouldn't be doing this myself, I'd have a mechanic do it. Just a ballpark figure is all I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance,
Bill

You can get the parts for about $500, add a pilot bearing, custom mount, new clutch, and it starts to get a bit pricey.

NA's are not worth it unless it modded to the teeth (for me).&nbsp A stock NA presents a lot of other problems unless the PO has kept up with maintenance (and can prove it via records).&nbsp Personally, I wouldn't pay more than $1,000 for an NA - the pic shows a really nice/shiny example, but photos can be manipulated.

For $2,700, I'd expect all brand new...
*brake hydraulics, included rebuild brake calipers
*interior electronics - LOTS of problems with power window switches. AC logicon, wiper cluster switch, warning display, etc.
*engine electronics - high failure items like the oil pressure sensor should have been replaced by now

The engine better not have a drop of oil leaking from it...

Remember, we're talking about a 15+ year old vehicle here.&nbsp There are things that just wear and tear just because of age.

Unless you have money to burn, these cars go for a lot less if you look around.

Looks good, too bad its an S4 but then again its in the s4 price range.

It is a GXL which is a bonus, but with the automatic its gonna be heavy and sloooooow.

A trans swap will cost an arm and a leg by a mechanic.

fist you would need to locate all the parts,

Clutch master, slave and line
brake and clutch pedal with complete assembly
Trans of course
drive shaft
flywheel
clutch disc / pressure plate
speedo cluster - unless you dont care about the extra lights
shifter, shifter boot, and trim
rear end - unless you dont care about the gear ratio

then a mechanic, I think the average on a swap like that is $1,200 + labor only

I would look around some more
good luck though

What if I said I'm not looking for a real high performance car at the moment; more of a daily driver, and would be willing to wait a while (maybe even a year or so) to swap out the transmission, then maybe an engine swap a few years down the line and make it fast eventually. Then would you say it's worth it? Do you think if the car is in good running shape and I maintain it properly it will last that long?

Thanks again guys

If you just want a DD go get an econobox. You will be able to save much more money from the MPG difference and all the little things that will go out on the FC like oil lines and what not. I would pass on this one.

Well I don't just want a daily driver, I want something that has potential. I already have a DD with no potential.

Then i would say save up more money for a TII or a GTUs or something along those lines because your not gonna have a free year with any RX car. Something will break even if its small. You will spend money fixing a car that is this old period. Just gather more money and you will be able to afford something way better in a year.
