Question Wont Start

I have been trying all day to get my 88 RX7 started. I drained the gas out of it, replaced it with fresh, and still nothing!! It acts like it is not getting any fuel. I sprayed ether in the intake, and it would run for a few seconds, then die again.

Could it be the fuel pump??

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know! I am tired and desprate.

Thanks,
Aaron

P.S. What does FC mean on these cars? I have seen it numerous times on this board.

FC means you and me and every other guy/gal with a 86-92 rx-7. Try pulling the EGI fuse under the hood, and removing the two bottom spark plugs, then turn over the motor for like 15 seconds. Put the plugs back in and put the fuse back in; now try and start the car without giving it any gas. Make sure your battery is on FULL CHARGE.

It could be flooded.... try running it longer with the ether..... as long as you can.
If it's running on the ether, than the ignition is fine...
Take the plugs out, if they are soaked, well, then its flooded.
Pull the EGI fuse... dry the plugs, crank the engine for a bit, put the plugs back in, and try again.

Could definately be the fuel pump.. also, check connections, like is the Air Flow meter hooked up? ETC.

If you don't have a service manual, get one... every 7 owner will need one at some point!

My money is on the fuel pump... I doubt its flooded- if it was, it wouldn't run on ether, the plugs would be too wet...

Can you hear the fuel pump running?
How long has it been since the car was started?

The car was sitting for 3 years. I dont smell fuel when I crank it over at all.... so, what does it take to replace the fuel pump, and how much do they cost?? I havent heard it buzz or anything.. I was thinking that could be whats wrong.

Flooded my ****. The fuel pump isn't working. Why? Got me. Probably the fuse inside the car. Its the fuse box next to your left ankle. Its the fuse in the third row from the bottom, second fuse from the left. Congratulations for using your head and spraying the starter fluid in the intake to see if the car had spark and would start with the addition of fuel. If the fuse stated above is good, then jumper what is called a fuel jumper plug near the right hand strut tower. Its a two wire plug, yellow in color if it isn't covered with a rubber boot. Its close to that boost/pressure sensor(black rectangular device with one vac hose and one connector to it). Jus putting a wire between the two female sockets on it will run the fiel pump if the key is turned to the on position. Tell us how things work out for you i.e. was the fuse good???? Was the pump a pumpin????

Well, the fuse was good, and I jumpered the plug under the hood. Still no pumpin going on. Should I just assume that the fuel pump is gone, and get a new one?? I would assume that if it was not started for so long, that it dried up and wont work now.

Thanks for all your help!

Either that or water seperation caused parts of the pump to rust...

Anyhow, a good fuel pressure gauge installed by the engine should be a good indication if your getting good pressure to the rail once you get the pump in. While your at it, change the fuel and air filters.

im not real smart and haven't been into fcs very long but when i was having fuel issues i pulled the fuel pump. took it out of the tank and onto the bench. the two wires that made it work were the black wires. one goes into the pump mechanism and the other is connected by a nut on the top of the plate(obviously the ground). initially when i hooked them up to a 12v power source... nothing. except a huge load on the 12v source. it may seem barbaric but i tapped on the side of the pump with a hammer and bingo it was working again. i did do some checking and couldnt find anything. even aftermarkets were kinda spendy. i think sometimes when these cars (or any cars) sit, the get a little frozen up, but the hammer seemed to do the trick for me. mine had been sitting for over 3 years. just my thoughts.

Get your self a good multimeter and check teh power back at the pump. Have a friend turn the key on and see if you are getting close to 12V back at the pump. if you are then the pump is bad. You will have to look quick because the voltage will only be there for a few seconds because of the shutoff circuit. If there is no voltage there then you can look at the wiring and fuses.

Might be easier if you pull the fuel line off the output of the fuel filter and fuel sprays out, then the pump is good. it should have quite a bit of pressure so if it doesn't spray fuel for a second then you either have an obstruction (filter clogged) or pump is NFG. If you think the filter is clogged, then pull the input to the filter and see if it has fuel pressure.

All of the above but maybe this also. If you have a meter, then locate the fuel pump electrical plug. Its under the rug, on the side of the left rear, strut tower. Its on the rear side of the strut tower under the rug. Shove the positive lead of your meter in the backside of the LARGE BLUE wire and make sure you have a good ground for the negative.Turn the key to start and the meter should read approx 12v. If not then the fuel relay could be bad. But if the 12v is there then pull that pump out and see whats up doc. Lots of ways to get to the finish line. Be sure to write back if you do not find the 12v on the BLUE wire when the key is turned to start. Thats why I wrote in a earlier post that it might be the lack of a good fuse. There is a relay under the dash (circuit opening relay) that is involved in turning the fuel pump on. Curious, has this car ever run for you, or did you just buy it and can't get it started????

man, usually it takes more than just a small fuel problem to sell it. maybe we'll see the guy that bought it back here later. hehe.
