Wiring mess with pics
Car is an 86 gxl na. I was removing my jack when I found this clump of wires in behind the jack. Why are the white yellow and black wires cut on the connector? Any ideas on this mess would be helpful.
I'm thinking that's the power antenna relay. Forgive me if I'm wrong but, I'm going to assume by the, what looks like, 8 gauge power wire, that there is/was an audio system in there. I will also hazard to guess that there was an aftermarket stereo installed and the negative switched power antenna wasn't properly "activated" behind the radio and this is what was thought up to get the antenna to work when the radio was turned on.
This is all stipulation, but I know when I did my radio install, the negative switch antenna threw me for a loop. Most cars are positive switched. In order to run 2 amps and the back asswards antenna I had to tuck two relays in behind my radio.
If I'm completely off base, let me know, I'd like to figure out what that wiring mess is as well.
Edit: Haha, ibeljin jumped in right before I hit post lol.

I just decided to dig through threads and see where I could help. It was a bit confusing trying to determine as the Haynes and FSM don't exactly show an 8 pin connector in the wiring diagrams, and the Body Electrical FSM doesn't give wiring or colors but shows an 8 pin connector.
i think buying a simple $10 antenna from walmart in favor of messing around with 20+ year old hacked wiring is just easier. None of that wiring is needed other than the actual antenna jack which is tucked away in the back. however thats just my opinion

I took out the stock antenna and tossed in a short rubber 12 inch mast antenna from..YEP..the world reknowned Car parts Store..Walmart!.cost?.14 bucks.
I personally like my power antenna and it hasn't given me any reason not to like it. Plus, I don't run the risk of some asshat coming along and knocking it off for ***** and giggles. It used to happen a lot a few years back in my town. $14 would start to add up rather quickly versus the price of a couple relays, though crutchfield sent one with the wiring kit and I have tons laying around.

Hook the car's antenna cable to the RUBBER antenna and it works.
If someone "asshat" is standing by your car trying to knock off a Limp piece of rubber then they have more time on their hands than they know what to do with.
You'd have more people breaking your extended antenna.Honestly that is why I got the rubber one.
I am just giving you a fast and easy option.Plug in and go..but it's your car,so I'll leave you to your spaghetti in the trunk..lol..(that looks nasty!)
Lol thanks for the replies, it does look like spaghetti lol. The antenna is broken too so I'll have to add this to my repair list. The past owners didnt take very good care of this 7. Slowly but surely she is getting better.

So i unburied my other 86 and got the antenna out of it. It was nice in one piece like it should be. Is there anything salvagable out of this mess I removed? Thanks for all the help guys.
i have a cheapo $30 aftermarket electric antenna and it has worked just fine for over the past 5 years. clean look when i don't have the radio on.
cheaper than replacing the cord masts when they break, and they will.
then you also don't have to worry about the loopy backwards ground activated relay system with any aftermarket radio.
