Question Will s4 Irons work in an s5 engine?

I searched, couldn't find. I have two blown engines. One is an s4 with a blown apex seal, the other is an s5 with blown coolant seals and screwed up irons where the cololant jacket blew on the end a middle irons. I want to use my front cover and all and rototrs and housings from the s5 as well as intake mani, and use the s4 irons. Will this work?

They will work, but the S4 irons will have an EGR passage on the middle iron that will need to be blocked off. Also, I think I heard somewhere that the S5's rear plate is more sturdy around the dowel pins than S4... but on your NA it won't matter...

Coolant temp sensor is different.

Also watch the o-ring between the front cover and front iron.

I thought the coolant sensor was on the water pump housing in s5, and on the bottom of the radiator on s4.. where is the one on the irons? I'm having a brain fart.

the one for the gauges is on the rear iron by the oil pressure sending unit.

Micaheli - the EFI coolant temp sensor is near the water pump on S4 and S5, the temp. gauge sender is near the oil pressure sender on the rear iron and different on the S5's. The one at the bottom of the rad is used mainly for the secondary air injection system to affect where the air pump sends air via the air control valve.

The S5 center iron has the EGR area blocked off as mentioned. No worries there.

What chassis is the S5 stuff going into? If you want to use the S5 intake and rats nest to control it, it would be easier to put the engine into the S5 car because of the wiring. Just thinking ahead.

thanks guys. I just finished taking it all apart yesterday, I was hoping that one of the irons would be good. They are all screwed. I will be using my s5 front cover and EVERYTHING else except the s4 irons which I will port, and practice doing so on my screwed up s5 ones, intake and everything from the s5, do all of the block off plates and get rid of my emissions. I am pretty sure I am wanting to put this stuff back in the s5 car just for simplicity, but at some point I am going to do a s5 t2 swap in one of the cars, and I was hoping ot do it into the s5 because i knew it would be easier wiring wise.

if you have to pass smog, the s4 has the air injection passages in the END irons, and the S5 (and s2,3,6,7,8) have the air injection in the center iron.

if you use the s4 lower intake, with s5 upper, then it works

I would recommend using irons that match your intake. That's what I did for ease and quality of the build on my FC.

thats interesting. i just built an s5 4port motor that didnt have the sensor. i stole one out of an s4 4port and its way too small. the s5 is bigger and a fine thread pitch. im thinking m10 1.5. maybe its just the s5 turbo block is different

Have you seen the port size(where the LIM meets the irons) difference between the two? Quite a difference IMHO.

S5 NA manifolds wont fit over a part of the S4 na iron., the iron must be modified.

Yep, there is a page here: http://howto.globalvicinity.com/gv_w...i=63&co=1&vi=1 about how to put an s5 intake on the s4 block. It is about just using the s5 UIM, but the stuff about grinding the block is the same.

I did not know that, when i searched i seen peolpe do the swap for the VDI, i didnt remember the thread saying the iron had to be modified.

Sorry for giving wrong info.

the emissions ports are in different spots, however, most of the gaskets are universal now anyways.
