Why is my dashboard beeping at me?

Okay, so ever since I installed a new steering wheel (not sure if that has anything to do with it), there has been an occasional beeping coming from my dashboard area. It does not seem to correspond to any of the idiot gauge lights. I am thinking it might be tied to the security system, which I don't believe functions properly.

What I hear is a pattern of three beeps, and then a space.

Any idea what this is?

You screwed up the alignment for the steering sensor, now your power steering computer is beeping at you.

Actually, sounds like steering sensor. Its the white plastic thing behind the steering wheel. There's an FSM method of testing it to make sure its in spec. Sometimes just cleaning it off and re-juicing it with dielectric grease works.

I could very well be wrong.. but thats what it sounds like.

EDIT: Sorry J-Rat... we were a minute apart.

Pull off the new wheel and "adapter" There is a white ring with grease on it. Line up the "marks" ( you'll know what I mean) Put it back together. Waalaa! No more beep..beep..beep.. The alignment on this behind your steering wheel.

Thanks, guys! I believe I got the issue resolved today, by matching the arrows to align the wheel before putting it on. Thanks to everyone that helped!

Okay, this issue is NOT resolved.

Those who thought it was the power steering computer were right; and it is 5 beeps, not 3.

I've re-aligned the steering wheel several times, but it will not stop beeping.

So, how do I trick the power steering computer into believing the steering wheel is aligned permanently, without disabling the beeper (which I believe is used for at least 4 other functions, too)?

Well, I think 3 beeps is the alignment problem. If you are getting 5... it might not be that.

No; I read the FAQ. 5 beeps is power steering computer. I was mistaken when I originally said 3, and have in turn confused everyone who has posted here.

From the FAQ:

"I keep hearing a beep beep beep
Probably the power steering computer telling you there is a problem with the system. The number of beeps before pausing will indicate the problem.
1-beep, pause, repeat - in case abnormality of speed sensor signal:
In case broken wires or short circuits occur to sensors or harnesses, the buzzer sounds 60-seconds after the engine speed signal of 2200 rpm continues for 18-seconds.
2-beeps, pause, repeat - in case abnormality of engine speed signal:
The buzzer sounds twice and repeats when the vehicle speed signal is missing input and/or no engine speed signal is found (short circuit, broken wire, etc.)
3-beeps, pause, repeat - in case abnormality of stepping motor signal:
The buzzer sounds when there are broken wires or short circuits in coils or harnesses.
4-beeps, pause, repeat - in case abnormality of the power steering microcomputer:
The buzzer sounds 4 and repeats when there are circuit troubles other than with the micro computer.
5-beeps, pause, repeat - in case abnormality of steering sensor signal: Steering sensor is mis-aligned or failed or steering wheel has been improperly installed."

I think it's reasonable at this point to assume my steering sensor is failed; it is not misaligned, unless I am missing something huge.

So the question becomes this: Do I replace my steering sensor? or is there an easy way to over-ride it?

If I can just sotter in a single wire and override it, or something to that effect, which would be a cheap/free, and easy fix, that would be best.

Unless you damaged the sensor, you are probably not installing it correctly. Check the FSM for how to re-align it.

Jones from India, or J-Rat, or anyone else for that matter- how close does the calibration for the white tabs, and the arrows on the left side have to be?

And do I need the steering column/front wheels in a certain position when I do it?

I would REALLY appreciate help right now; I can't for the life of me figure this damned thing out, and Ken Carswell has failed to return my phone call.

Okay, I reinstalled the stock steering wheel, and that did not stop the beeping. I'm ******* sick of it, and I don't really care that it won't be original; Where is the part that makes the beeping sound, and how do I disable it?

If you have moved the alignment around 360 degrees or more it will still beep until backed up to the right zero alignment. I had to play with mine for a day or two. It was registering I had the wheel turned 1 full rotation to the clock wise.. so I turned the alignment markers 360 deg. counter clock wise...

OK, if your turn signals cancel and engage properly then the "steering wheel sensor" as you call it is installed into the steering wheel properly.

To my knowledge there's no way to stop the beeping and retain the function of the power steering. Perhaps you could open the case with the circuit board in it and rip the beeper out?

But the computer is under the steering column. Silver box with a single plug.

I've installed numerous wheels and never had this issue.....check any recent wiring you have touched.

You could just unplug it? I did that until I just pulled it out.. But I got rid of the power steering too. Haven't looked into how to do it with the p/s left on the car..

I found a final solution.

I took out the power steering computer, and cut the connection to the buzzer.

I still have power steering, and no annoying beeping.

Thanks, guys
