Unhappy beep beep beep beep beep -------- make it stop!

My car: '86 GXL
The Problem: While driving my car at highway speeds, after a min or so my car will start beeping at me. 5 beeps then a pause, and it repeats. I can shut the car off and then restart it (while doing highway speeds) and it will go away for a minute. If I pull over and let it idle it will continue to beep for a little bit, then stop.

My gauges seem to read normal, Temp maybe a bit on the high side but still within the 'normal' range. None of the idiot lights come on (they all work). I checked all the fluids too. I'm at a loss as to what the problem is.

Oh another thing. This all started after I changed the interior (dash and everything). The previous owner hacked the interior up pretty good, so I think he might have just cut out the speaker (wherever it is) so it wouldn't beep.

Any Ideas as to what the damn thing is beeping about? I don't want to drive the car while it does this... and I'm not putting any more work into it until I can solve this. Someone please help me

The only mod I can see on the car is a dp... if that would make any difference.

The beeping is coming from the power steering computer..
the most typical cause of beeps is that the p/s cpu doesn't get a speed reading from the speedsensor in the instrument cluster...

is your speedometer working correctly?

The speedo appears to be working correctly. I will try and swap it out for another set and see if i get the same results.

Thanks for the help!

my power steering computer does the same thing - actual culprit is a small leak in the line in front of the rad... my solution is as long as the level is full it doesn't beep

good luck

I swapped in another gauge cluster - same results. I suppose the speed sensor in both clusters could be bad, but I'm going to move onto other possibilites for now.

The level of fluid is in the normal range, and there hasn't been a noticeable change in the last 2 weeks, so I don't think there is a leak. Also did a VERY quick visual and didn't see any leaks.

When the beeping occurs, It is usually at high speeds, so I can't tell if there is still power assist - since the faster you go the easier it is to turn without assist. There have been a few instances where the steering was very stiff (at slower speeds) and it has only done this a few times within the last month.

I'm thinking that it is the control unit... what do you guys think?

p/s computer - beeping

I just 'sort of" dealt with this during the summer. 5 beeps, over and over after the car had been running for a minute or two (in-town or highway, and it would start and stop the beeping at random.)

First solution - get into the p/s computer and disconnect the buzzer.

The p/s *was* sluggish, but the buzzing continued even after the p/s pump was replaced with one that has been working perfectly.

I've noticed with this girl that the warning buzzers seem to be rather sensitive, buzzing even if a component hasn't failed yet and isn't going to fail any time soon. The is a VERY LOUD buzzer mounted at the bottom-center of the instrument cluster circuit board. Yanked that one out, too. Eventually turned out that the contacts in the headlight switch were starting to wear down. Note use of the words 'starting to.'

i have posted a couple of times with this same problem.

it is a five beep pattern and it goes off on hard left turns. it wont start unliess i am driving the car so i am sure that it is in the power steering

went to the "Mazda rotary technician" and he said "duh....aye never heard uf dat..."

i am really anxious to get htis fixed and i am not about to start yanking warning buzzers out

the beeping is something that some old japanese cars had that after you hit a certain it would start to beep. i guess it was a precautinary thing or something but i think its normal on some old model cars

No. The beeping is the power steering computer reporting an error. Read the thread.

it is the pwer steering computer. this has happend to mee twice. the first time it drove me nuts for months because it wouldn't do it all the time. as soon as I was out of the car ans listening for it it would stop. There is something in the pump itself that goes bad, so when the computer gets error codes, it alerts you... but it never stops unless you are looking for it.
