Why Is the Knock Sensor on the Front Rotor?

As opposed to the Rear Rotor?

(Apply bad Japanese accent)
Japanese engineer #1: "Which rotor for the knock sensor?"
Japanese engineer #2: "You toss the coin, I'll call it..."

Seriously, I'm sure they had a good reason, I just don't know what it is. The knock sensor is pretty much useless over ~4000rpm because there's too much other noise for it to be able to differentiate knocking. It's mainly there to detect knocking caused by lugging the engine at lower revs. Perhaps under those conditions it's the front rotor that's more susceptible to knock.

wrong answer.

It's there because you have an s4.

If you had an s5, it would be in the center housing.

I have a s5 and am pretty sure It's on top of the Front Trailing Spark Plug.

So, out of curiousity, what would happen, given the Knock Sensor does It's thing when "knocking" occurs?

Nope, you're wrong. The S4 knock sensor is mounted on the center plate below the oil filler. The S5 knock sensor is mounted above the trailing spark plug on the front rotor housing. If your car differs from above then if has probably had a rebuild using parts from a different series.

When knocking is detected the ECU retards the ignition timing until it stops.

If you want to verify it works throw a timing light on the car and hit the housing with a hammer (lightly... ). It should retard timing.

Unfortunately, I'll never be able to do this due to It being rendered useless when I Install my MT LT8. Too bad.

I just went out and looked at the car.. hehehe, I had them confused.

so reverse the numbers up there, then it makes sense.

As for why it's mounted there.. does ANYONE know?
