Why does the convertible weigh so much?

Is it the cover assembly that takes all the weight?
I've also noticed that some particular engine parts must be for the convertible and not the coupe? Why is this?

Just curious

Actually, most of the extra weight is in the subframe. They have to do a lot of reinforcement to keep the chassis as stiff as the coupe. The top of the vert really doesn't weigh that much more or less than the B pillar and up on a coupe, especially with the rear glass and a sunroof factored in, I'm guessing.

I don't think I've noticed any particular engine parts different, but I'm probably wrong. I know the suspension parts are different, to deal with the different weight and center of gravity..

pretty certain the engine parts are identical in all N/As (for corresponding series/years). I've never seen any difference.

Wonko is correct -- most of the weight is w/ the additional frame reinforcement. Take a look at this thread of mine -- it will give you a good visual of the frame reinforcement on a vert. If someone can find similar pics for a coupe, you could compare.

I thought the extra weight was due to the required fat chick in the passenger seat when driving around with the top down.

Engine parts from the coupe (my 89 vert has 90 GXL engine ("block") with the vert parts bolted to it) My understanding is that it is the exact same as the fully loaded coupe big brakes beefer springs shocks sways. but why 200 Lbs of stiffening? who knows why, Icemark probably does. you would think they would use aluminum or something light of that nature after all they used aluminium pedals and that saved what like 10 Lbs?

Ill bet that motor ways a lot too.

The subframe is definitely heavier. I notice a few extra beams ( or whatever you call themsupporting the car) when I lift it up for an oil change vs a coupe. As far as weight savings go the vert has an aluminum hood vs a steel hood. That saves some pounds also I guess.

I've been looking for an aluminum hood for my coupe, are they compatible? Any idea what the weight difference is?

I happened to weight the removable roof panel section this weekend while taking it off, I got 21.5 lbs. I would think the top would weight less than the coupes roof and hatch glass, but maybe not?

Plus the aluminum hood saves about 20 pounds, the BBS wheels also save a few pounds.

Amazing how much the extra bracing underneath must weight.

The metal the rocker panels, inner and outer, are made from is at least twice as thick on the 'vert. There is additional metal layers where the doors attach behind the front fenders up to the cowl, all thicker than the coupe too. Also lots of extra bracing welded in in various places with a huge one the whole width behind the seats.
