Mine does the same thing but it looks like all my wires are connected, I know its not the bulbs because they worked before I swapped them over from my old 7. Is there anything else it could be?

I just went through this problem in December. The lights were all fine and there was power at the switch, but no reverse lights. Turns out that the switch on the tranny died.

Check out the FSM steps for troubleshooting the reverse switch. This will tell you if your switch went bad.

can someone take a picture of it? or describe it a bit? my switch is broken so the reverse lights stay on all the time, I need to just unplug it for now cuz I've already gotten a warning from a cop about it!

The T2 tranny is on the right (GSL-SE on left).

The backup light switch is the large brass looking cylinder with red wires coming from it (near the top). Maybe you can loosen it from below but looks like it would be a bitch to get at. It takes one real big wrench to loosen it if it's on real tight.

Good Luck,

Scott

I just had a manual swap as well and my reverse light is not working either. I had a friend help me troubleshoot it with wiring here and there, but it didn't work. I want to try this "reverse light switch" swap, but I don't know how the unit looks like. Any pictures would be helpful ...

Non turbo reverse light switch: http://www.mazdatrix.com/86-92Electrical-Chassis.htm

Excerpt taken from Rotaryressurection.com

wire reverse lights. Find the 2 red wires on the switch on your 5sp transmission.

If working with an 89-91 car, find the 6 wire plug near the starter, and the 3 wire plug near that. ON the 3 wire plug there are 2 pins together and one offset; run a wire from this pin to either of the red wires on the trans. On the 6 wire plug, locate the bottom row, center pin; run a wire from this pin to the other wire on the trans.

If working on an 86-8 car, there should be a 4 wire plug by the starter. Connect the 2 right side pins to the 2 red wires on the trans.

The reverse light switch (8130-17-640D) is NLA from Mazda. Atkins Rotary sells Mazda reverse switches (https://www.atkinsrotary.com/store/8...tegory_id=1093) for $36.50. Usually, the switch will develop a high internal resistance and stop working. Also, check the electrical connections at the switch harness. I once had problems with the switch not working and the problem turned out to be corroded electrical connections at the switch.
