Where I'm at.
Well, in between work and other activities, me and my little brother have began pulling apart my engine. Upon clearing up the engine bay a little, I have found that my turbo is nicely caked in oil (pic 1). There is a little bit of shaft play, but the turbo seems to be good still. Also, as seen in the pic with the throttlebody (pic 3), there is some oil caked on the butterfly valves. Hopefully I can get everything apart and get this engine out soon. This will be my first time doing something like this, the only way to learn is to try it yourself. Okay, pics.

Yes, omg this thing is a pain, it's so messy and horrid. As for the oil filter, I didn't buy it, the previous owner did. This is my first time tearing down any engine and this thing is horrible. I tried getting the damn lim off today and it's so messy I don't have time. Going to the swap meet tomorrow and see if I can find some parts, or maybe a car I can actually drive. Hopefully within like a week or so, I can pull the engine.

Well, it ran fine when I bought it. It was dirty, but it was a t2. I've had the car since august. I added some stuff to it and just daily drove it. After I installed a new bov, that's where problems started. I had a few threads about it, the idle was screwed up, then the car wouldn't start.
After a few days of driving, I went out to start it and it was backfiring a lot. I kept it idling to check and smoke started coming out of the engine bay so I immediately shut it off. It was idling shitty also. The car has 160k on it and the previous owner said he never changed the engine, so I guess it was inevitable.

looks like your abs and PS were leaking like hell down there! Dont worry because when you intall the motor you are going to remove all that leaky stuff, right? YOu would not believe how much easier it is to work on a t2 when you have all that removed. Keep us updated on the project though at least you gotta good shell to work with
