They can't just inspect the vehicle and tell you if its good enough to drive? Whats the engine number got to do with whether or not the car is road worthy?
I don't know where to find the number.

The front side plate should have the number stamped into it.

Got you on this one, kevin.
There is a 6 digit number stamped on the front iron, just in front of where the front engine o-ring mounts, behind and slightly to the left of the water pump.
On this engine, the number is 073284, but you can't really read it.

BTW.... this is my "paint engine". It has about 30 coats of paint on it. All of the iron are trashed, and both rotor housings are trashed. I quickly build two engines during a rebuild, and this way, I minimize masking and ensure a good paint job. Typically, the rotor housings get silver and the last engine got black engine paint, so that's why this block is the opposite paint scheme.

You can see on the front iron, whenre the water pump mounting ear broke off. This was caused by an out-of-round water pump, which came in that condition brand new from Mazda. (so check all of your new pumps with a dial indicator!)

And what, may I ask, does that number denote? What is to say that it wasn't rebuilt from parts from another rotary?

This is why there is no real engine code on rotary engines other than 13B or 12A or 20B. Parts are so interchangeable, you can put together whatever you want. So, again, what is the point of an engine number?

Its for when you need your car road-worthied.

I agree its useless since it does not mark an original block, but this is the number he is looking for, and where it is located. The number denotes what engine that front iron is from, and only that. It is nothing like an engine block code in pistons engines.

If you are still unable to find this number on your motor, try posting your question to rec.autos.rotary. There are quite a few Australians subscribing to that ng and maybe somebody knows how to deal with your situation...

Damn, I'm tired... :sleepy:
