When the FC Turbo II was new.....
When the FC Turbo II was new.....
Did Mazda have the problems it had with people blowing motors like they did with the FD... you know the FD kinda gave the rotary its bad name because so many motors went from improper tuning... just wondering if the same happened with the FC or if the Turbo II's never really got a bad rap.

Have had mine since new S5 TII -The only problems I'm aware of was with my S4 which the dealership and Mazda had no fix-High exhaust temps created gas fumes in the car, and the trailing plugs not firing. That was fixed in the S5. All the time I spent at the dealer's service dept (we became best of friends), very few mechanical gremlins in the FC. Boy, that was a long time ago.
I have all my original reciepts, window sticker, manual, etc... and it came with this neat little booklet, 10 Minute Maintenance Course. If they followed it, then thier FC would of lasted, so I think its definitely the owner not taking care of the car. Here I scanned it for you guys, check it out!

it says you always check (this or that) after refueling. I have seen many rx7's at gas stations and have yet to see one guy/girl pop the hood... Is that abit of an exaggeration or what?
(btw this question is coming from someone who does not own an rx7 yet)

you should do it with every car... but nody does.
5000 miles
crap I do mine before 2000
I figured every other day or so(wich I guess would be the same timespan as you would refuel) unless I had run the car in a less then humble manner or if I was coming up on the next oil change date.
Though, I have absolute no problem with doing this(as a matter of fact I would like kinda like the idea of popping up the hood of a sports car infront of ppl/chicks... ) but to know that there are more then a few people out there that dont take this kind of care to it makes me kinda of nervous about finding one that hasnt been neglected..(but thats OT)
Sorry about changing the subject.

Regardless of turbo or NA, the rotary engine got a bad rap from:
1) The old rumors about blowing rotor seals under 50,000 miles, even though this problem was fixed long before the FC went into production.
2) A reputation of blown engines due to the owner not maintaining the proper oil or coolant levels and change intervals, which is still a problem to this day.
3) Bad gas mileage and low torque, which also continues to this day.
Back in the FD day...
The main gripe was that it was a real sportscar, lol. Many people wanted the look of a sportscar, but didnt like the harsh ride of the FD. Unlike the previous RX-7 models, the FD was priced out of the range of the average Joe, and the corporate weenies who could afford it generally didn't like it as a daily driver, or even a weekend driver. Also, #2 above is foreign to lots of office geeks, so I think that the FD suffered more losses in this area than previous models of RX-7. Corporate geeks never work on their own cars, so the reputation for blown engines due to bad tuning didn't start until the young drag racers started buying them on the used market, and started messing with things that they didn't understand.
