What is missing from this Shifter?

I need to get some parts for this shifter.
Can someone Identify what this shifter is missing? or what needs to get replaced?
Can someone recommend where to get the parts that would be in stock?

looks like the rubber boot is absent. its just been worn on a lot.
i found the whole shabam at a junkyard. it consists of a rubber accordion type thing that goes over the shifter, and another rubber gasket that goes over that. I'll post pics later.

Well I can take more pictures. What would you need to see in order to determine what's missing or needs to be replaced?

what are you looking at rx7club on? The jumbotron at a football stadium and your sitting at the 50 yard line?

Those pictures are decently sized but without an accurate description of the problem it's hard to tell what he needs.

Looks like he just needs the rubber rings around the shifter.

you dont want to, because its a bitch to get back in right. besides that, unless you are installing a short throw, there is really no reason to remove it.

i had to fool around with it for 15 minutes or so it finally get it to pop back in "socket" once taken out.

however...

the way i took mine out, is there is a small "over sized paperclip" looking retainment. just slide her out of the way, and pull up.

from your pictures, and your reference to "step one" i am assuming you are meaning to take the shift **** off?

if you have an aftermarket "fits all" ****, it may not be a screw on, but attached by smaller Allen screws. seeing as how i don't know what kind of shift **** you have, i can't really help you there. but in all seriousness, if you can't take your shift **** off, please don't attempt to remove the shifter.

Holy cow! It looks like that boot melted away. I've seen them torn up and what not but I haven't seen them melted like that. There must have been some serious heat comin from that tranny. That could make getting the **** off quite difficult, but it should still twist off with enough effort.

Lol that's what I was thinking too.
I was following the step-by-step guide from mazdatrix and I noticed that I didn't have like a "Two Round Sealing Boots"

But what parts would I buy to get to restore the shifter back to normal.
My symptoms are simply a very sloppy shift lever.

Get a copy of the parts fiche from one of the links in the FAQ. Find the diagrams and the parts numbers for the shifter assembly. Then go to MazdaTrix.com or to your local Mazda dealer and order the parts. There are several rubber boots (as I recall 4) that nest and must be installed in a specific order. Plus there is the boot in your picture that is held down by bolts. You need that and a gasket for it to do the job right.

You will need the bushing kit to solve this problem. MazdaTrix or Mazda has those, but get the MazdaTrix kit which has an extra bushing.

you also need a new one of these:

that and the boot kit and you should be a lot better. if it's still sloppy after that, you'll have to replace the bushings underneath all that stuff where the shifter and transmission meet.

Wow, yours looks just like mine did before I replaced the parts.

If you want your shifter to feel new, get these parts:
http://mazdatrix.com/getprice.asp?partnum=17-5150-M501 - Groove bushing - 11$
http://mazdatrix.com/getprice.asp?partnum=17-480A-M513 - Inner Shift Boot - 30$
http://mazdatrix.com/getprice.asp?partnum=64-490B-FB01 - Outer Shift Boot - 60$
http://mazdatrix.com/getprice.asp?partnum=17-481A-M508 - Upper Shift Bushing - 16$
http://mazdatrix.com/getprice.asp?partnum=17-4810-M501 - Lower Shift Bushing - 10$

After purchasing these parts, your shifter should feel brand new, If it still sticks, change the fluid in the tranny.

If you are gonna be replacing all the bushings you might want to think about an upgrade while you are in there and buy a Corksport short shifter kit. It comes with all the bushings you need except the Outer Boot.

90% down the page:
http://corksport.com/store/category/...-interior.html
Info on the shifter here:

To the OP:
Keep in mind that the sloppiness can be also be attributed to a worn/missing bottom bushing. My shifter was terribly sloppy, and the problem was not completely resolved until I replaced my bottom bushing. Actually, I made my own.

Something to think about...
