They are absorbed by the charcoal. I always leave the canister in my cars.

Anyone releasing Freon in to the atmosphere, that is a Federal offense that carries a stiff fine. Be careful doing that ****.

I believe that the purpose of the charcoal canister is to take any fumes from the gas tank and store them, unitl the engine can use them. If you park your car on a hot day, you will form gas vapours, so they have to go somewhere....
Sure you could vent them to the atmosphere but thats illegal. Or you could plug it off and allow the vapours to build pressure in the gas tank. Just hope your not hit from behind.
I personally would jog for a week and lose the 2 lbs the canister is worth.

I agree Felix about the charcoal.
Freon causes the breakdown of the ozone chemicals. Most air conditioning shops will drain your system for free (in canada anyway), so why bother to pollute?

Venting gas fumes illegal? I doubt that, however freon I don't doubt. Gas fumes are damn near impossible not to vent in one way or another!

In Canada, it is illegal to vent gasoline vapour from a car in any situation. This just makes sense. If you vent gasoline vapour from your car, you are much more likely to catch fire and explode. Think venting gasoline vapour undreneath the car around the hot exhaust..... not smart. Or someone smokes around your car parked in a parking lot. The venting of gas is illegal.
Sure you will leak gas during a fill up. But this cannot be controlled. Everything else can. This is why you can't smoke in gas stations.

Gasoline vapour is not purposefully vented at a gas station. A gas station merely allows liquid gasoline to be transfered from a pump to a gas tank. If it leaks from your tank, or if you spill it, it is the stations' fault, but the pumps or the station itself does not leak gasoline vapour. Think how retarded that would be.

It happens, the nozzles have fumes, the gas tank vents fumes, thats why they tell you to shut the engine off and to put your cigarette out Even lawn mowers vent into the open air!

Hell, even a lot of vehicles vent gas fumes that are ignitable (hence backfires/flames/etc) and can still pass standard emissions

my caprice does it, 1993 with the catalytics on it. My motorbike used to do it with the Cobra FR1's. I'd like to look that up and see if they have a law on that, I can't find any information on gasoline fumes being illegal

What year of caprice leaglly vents gasoline fumes outside the car? 1993 does not. I guarantee it does not. All vehicles must contain gasoline vapours. I guess if you leave your car for a while, all of the gas will evaporate and leave the system, and you will be left stranded? Nope. Won't happen.
Can't comment on motorbikes, don't know the law on them. But it is illegal for a car to vent gasoline vapour to the atmosphere.
Sorry.

http://www.google.com/ You will find out gasoline vapors are present at almost every gas pump, hell, have you ever looked at a briggs & straton? They have vents cut right into the gas tank cap! And yes, my stock caprice WILL pass fumes through it, quite a few cars will, especially the older they get. Just look it up on google, you'll see right away.

All cars will pass emissions with or without a charcoal canister, doesn't mean its legal....
I am talking about cars, not small engines. Name me the last time a Briggs and Stratton had to pass an emissions test... Valid examples only please.

I never said they did have to pass emissions, my caprice however, does, and it WILL emit fumes, go stick a spark plug in a standard car with a model T coil to it, floor it in low gear and let off going down a hill and see if you spit flames, chances are your car will do it. Fumes are impossible to not vent, where do you think the smell of gas at gas station comes from?

The gas smell comes from the small amounts of gasoline that evaporates from cars or spillage, not because the station openly vents fumes. That would be retarded. Think how much money they would los eon a hot day. Go to a gas station at 3 am, when no on else is around, it'll smell fine.
I don't care if you car passes emissions and vents to the atmosphere. I am saying it is illegal. Thats it. Check your laws before you respond. You're yet to name me a car or truck that vents to the atmosphere legally from the factory. It is illegal for a car to vent gasoline vapour to the atmosphere, and I would prefer to have my gas vapous stored in a charcoal can than pressurized in my gas tank ready for explosion.
Old mustangs and pintos never ran a charcoal canister. Run into them from behind and KABOOM!

my 86 Chevy silverado has no canister/no vent, and it got t-boned in the gas tank, all it did was dent, no explosion no nothing, and I have checked all of michigans. I've also seen a '72 Chevelle rear-ended so hard the gas tank split it two, still didn't explode. And, a general gas station at 3AM will start to smell like gas (due to vapors) There is nothing I can find in my local state, or canadian laws that says it is illegal for gas fumes to be vented, what do you think happens when you pour gasoline into a funnel or something? It's not illegal to do that.

Ok... Is this a nowledge test. It really doesent matter. But The charcoal canister removal is for room not weight as someone aposed too. Another thing I dont think anyone relizes.. I had a tub of gasoline in my mechanics shop left over a weekend in an enclosed room. Meckanic opened the door and got a headach from the smell, it still would not lite with a match. So thierfor SONICAROT.. I would unplug the charcoal canister and run the extra hose somewere unplugged. U might smell a little gas every now and then but It definatly would not ignite and explode... So thier it is.. I might do this when I make my custom intake. It will be sticking out were the charcoal can is.
