In my uneducated position, it appears to be very clean.

Though his exhaust is all screwed up, it shouldn't come from both sides.
V8 Swap? ...

That doesn't look like a stock engine or transmission, son.

Yes, it is an LS1/T56 swap. Has nothing to do with the rust though...

That looks like normal surface rust. If there are no visible holes, you should be fine.

that engine/tranny combo will make your chassis rust alot faster, i would swap it back out for a 13T ASAP or you wont have anything left.

Thanks.

What about the areas that I've circled in this pic:

I know very little at FCs at this point, so I'm not sure how typical those areas are to rust and break down like they appear to be in the pic.

I'll be looking at it in more detail this weekend hopefully, if the weather holds up on Saturday morning.

Huh?

@OP...the pinch seams almost always get crushed.
Unless they are split and really bad, not that big a deal.
Search for Aaron Cake's "Tina" build thread to see a beautifully restored undercarriage.

Based on the pictures, there is very little rust on that car. A little work with a wire wheel and rust preventive paint will do the job. Any minor damage to the pinch welds can be filled easily with a little bit of welding.

It's not nearly as nice as one would believe. But it is rust free.

Thanks, Aaron. I've been searching for the posts about your undercarriage, but you've made a lot of threads here it seems! Can you point me out to which one has the underbody stuffs?

Thanks

Molly

I should point out that the underbody should not be a concern. It should be that frightening wiring job. Also that looks like an automatic slushbox?!

This thread covers painting the underside of the car with POR-15:

Thanks.

It's an LS1 and a T56 6-speed manual.

And yeah, the wiring job makes me but I'm sure my friends and I can work through it and have a really cool car in the end.

Its a T56, we wouldn't bother with an automatic car. The wiring shouldn't be TOO bad, granted it still looks like a nightmare. We just wanted to make sure that it was a solid car before we invest any time and money into it.

FC chassis are cheap
you can get a rolling shell for a few hundred bucks

the motor + tranny + whatever mounting solution they used would form the bulk of the cost in a LS1 swapped FC. make sure the motor and trans is healthy, and the mounting solution isnt garbage
