Gas smell

87 GXL Auto


Lately, and rarely, when starting the car there is a gas smell. Just wondering if it is something I should be worrying about or not. It happens very rarely and I was trying to pin point when it happens but it doesn't matter what time sometimes it is on first start in the mourning and sometimes after the car is warm. Is it just flooding a bit?

check your pulsation dampner to make sure its not starting to leak. -mike

I replaced a plugged charcoal cannister and that fixed my problem. Thought it was the PD , but wasn't

While your looking for your gas smell issue, here are some things to check since your in that area; pulsation damper for leaks, charcoal cannister for clogs, fuel injector rubber o-rings and grometts for cracks and leaks, fuel filter for clogs. If the problem persists and there are no clogs or leaks around the engine bay area you could have a cat or two going bad assuming you still have your stock exhaust.

i have same problem where ans what r these?? pulsation damper , charcoal cannister ... i found somthing looks like a big black inline fuel filter on drivers side of engin compartment near the firewall down twoard the pavement is this the charcoal canister because it smells like gas and is leaking a bit... would that could my car to cut out at high RPM's if it was clogged bad or leaky???

That is the fuel filter, if it is leaking, fix it.

The pulsation damper is just underneath the dynamic chamber (upper intake manifold). You can see it right back of the thermostat housing. It is on the primary fuel rail.

IF YOU SMELL GAS, FIX IT!!!

(Take it from someone who ignored it, you don't want an engine fire.)

haha yeah, i have herd of these cars catching fire...do you think that leaky or clogged filter could cause my car to cut out?? at high rpm"S??
