Mazda dominated IMSA GTU racing during the 80s with the first generation 12A engine based cars. The GTU class was for cars with an engine displacement of 2.5L or less. In case you're wondering the engines were peripheral port and made up to 330hp. The 2nd gen has a larger displacement engine with a pumping capacity of 2.6L, so it was pushed into the GTO class. Mazda attempted to be competitive by using a n/a 3-rotor engine, I think it is what we know as the 13G, but don't quote me on that. GTU is a reference to the racing class and Mazda's incredible success there.
I'm not at all convinced that "RX" was intended to mean "Rotary eXperment", it is simply a name that sounds "sporty".

RX = Rotary Experiment.
GTU = Racing class Mazda named a model after. GTU cars have less weight than GXL.
GXL = Luxury model of GX.
GX = Canadian version of the GTU (DRLs)
GTUs = Rarest North American model. "s" was added to distinguish it from the GTU, which became the base model in the S5.
And to those who say RX doesnt stand for whats stated above, Discovery Channel, SpeedChannel,
Motortrend TV, Road and Track and a local RX-7 Tuning shop (owned by a japanese fellow whose dad worked with one of the original 10a motors back in Hiroshima when Mazda was still known as Toyo Kogyo) have confirmed this for me.)
and dont ask ur local Mazda dealer, they know squat about rotaries. They're just guys who work on them coz they work for Mazda.

You said:

Remember the 86-87 Sport, the 88 GTU, and the 89-90 GTUs were the Sport models, while the Luxury, SE, and 89-90 GTU were the (or one step up from) strippy base models in the USA and basicly the GX.

See when the cars came in at the importer, they thought that the factory had forgotten to put the stickers on, and port installed stickers on the first couple of batches.
And some of the dealers also did the same thing, before the 91 POP came out showing that there was no longer the GXL model, as Mazda was trying to gte the dealers into the frame of mind for the way the FD would come.
mine might turn out to be a real rare car then.
i have a 91 N/A with those GXL decals on them and paint code 5N: Brave Blue. I'm told its one of the rare S5 colours only made in 91. It came auto, then i did a 5 speed swap.

i have a 5N 91, too. manual of course and no rare gxl stickers. paints peeling on the roof, especially the sunroof.
Icemark, i'm starting to believe youre a Bot. i think Mazda programmed you to enlighten us idiots. if you reply, please refrain from using binary. i am not a Bot.

The GT was the Turbo on the Sport platform... Manual mirrors, manual windows, Radio and cassette, but no extra amps or CD, no leather, tall center consol arm rest. The only options were going to be a sunroof. Came standard with power steering, tilt wheel, and air conditioning, but that was about it.
Imagine a Turbo that only weighed 2600, with none of the power Gee Gaws and you have the GT.

Yeah, I got a set of the mirrors laying around too... but you know its ripping out the power windows, and door lock.
I tell myself... well how much more weight can that add... then how much more wieght can the rear cover add etc... it becomes a weight gain cycle.
