Weird Header Question...Guru's Please Respond...
Ok, as many of you know, I had a bit of trouble installing my RB header. Like an idiot, I did not let the engine cool enough, and actually pulled the header studs out of the block. 2 of the holes are all good, but when I tried to reinstall the now bolts, I torqued BOTH of them down too much, and broke them off! The other holes are basically F.U.B.A.R., so here is my question: Do you absolutly NEED all 4 bolts holding the header on, or could I mabye use just the 2, after I remove the broken studs, and install 2 new bolts? Would this leak? Any ideas???? I am pullin the old engine this weekend (f'ing FINALLY) and I just was wonderin, if not, time to learn how to install a Heli-Coil.....
On a side note, I actually had just 1 bolt on there for a few days, and it drove fine, just had no bottom end torque. ANd was loud as HELL.

No- don't drive it without all four studs on.
3 maybe in a pinch for a few days, but definately not 2
While it may start up and run without major leaking, what will happen is that the flange will start to warp like crazy from the heat, and even putting 4 bolts on won't straighten it out- it'll have to machined flat again. Sound worth it???
Trust me on this- I've seen it happen, and had it happen to myself in less than a week.
Damn- how tight were you trying to get those bolts that the 14mm studs broke?!?? You don't need those to be too tight at all- just enough to seal the gasket.
You may have to tap them for the next size up, and drill the holes on the flange out a bit too. The big pain is the location of the holes.
Good luck.

Another question: I drove it twice. Will the header be warped already??? Man, I sure hope not.......
When I took it off the car, it looked ok to me. The car is at mom's house, so I can't look at it till Thursday!! I ahven't even seen my car in almost a MONTH!!!!!!!! ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Pulling the engine... fun.... You will realize that you only need a few different sizes of sockets and wrenches- like 10, 12, 14 (maybe 15?)mm. BUT you could use about 60 different shapes wrenches and extensions!
Good luck- take your time, and I hope you don't have AC!
The biggest bitch is getting it back together- the aligning of the engine to the tranny.
You are going to need a big *** open end wrench to get the oil cooler lines off too- my adjustable wasn't cutting it- they are ON THERE! I think they are about 1 1/8" size or something....

you shouldn't need to pull the engine.. just the intake manifold.. Drill might be a tight fit, might need to get a right angle drill for it, but get the right heilcoil set, and the right drill bit for that helicoil, and you should be good to go. It's M10x1.5 IIRC. Probably want to doublecheck that. Getting new studs is probably a junkyard run or a dealer run.

Well, no a/c and the p/s is coming off, so no worries there. ANd Sean gave me an AWESOME how to on pullin the engine. My neighbor works at a local shop, and he said I would need to pull the engine to get the correct angle on the bolts for redrilling the holes. And I am just gonna install bolts, not studs cuz I already picked up a set of grade 8 ones when I first screwed it up!!
