Question Water temp and oil pressure gauges

I'd do a search but it's down still, sorry guys. Or at least i thought it was, can ya help anyways? I just got Auto Meter oil pressure and water temperature gauges, both electrical. Where are the stock senders at for both gauges? Thanx for the help.

Both below the oil filter. one with the big end is the oil, small one is water.

No, it is the sender for the temp gauge. There's no oil temp gauge on these cars.

Electrical is used stock. It takes a sender and translates that into voltage, read by a guage.
Mechanical runs hard lines into the gauges, via braided stainless steel lines. They work great, are a little cheaper, but harder to install, and run the fluid into the vehical.
I am certain that that is what those holes are below the oil filter, TMAK. Take them out with the car running to check.
But I did think there was an oil temp unit. Aren't there two sending units in the opil pan? One is for oil level, and then what would the other be, NZ?

Accuracy depends on brand, but electrical ones are probably a bit better, and they're easier to install. But electrical gauges generally only have a 90º sweep, whereas mechanical are 270º, so they're harder to read accurately; and electrical gauges are always a lot more expensive.

You're right Sean, Mazda calls it a "oil thermo unit", but I'm stuffed if I can find what it's for. Anyone?

Sean, I am not trying to doubt you but isnt the stock water temperature sender on top of the radiator rather than under the oil filter? The round thing that is under the oil filter is the oil pressure sender

Man, you've got yourself totally confused!

Here's all of them:
Under oil filter: temp gauge sender
Back of water pump: engine temp sensor for ECU
Top of thermostat housing: thermoswitch for elec fan
Bottom of radiator: temp switch for emission controls
Top of radiator: coolant level

There's two senders under the oil filter, the other's oil pressure.

Not necessarily...SPI makes electronic 270-degree sweep gauges in the U.S.

Thats a sender for low coolant level, not temperature. Try draining some fluid, and you'll see what it is for....
But the small single wire sender underneath the big oil pressure sensor is for the temperature gauge in these cars. Try disconnecting it, the temp gauge won't work.
There is another coolant temp sensor in the bottom of the rads of series 4 cars, used for warm up emissions purposes, FYI.

Its the sensor for the sub zero injection system. IIRC J-specs don't have this.

okay you guys are confusing the heck out of me. Where is that temperature sender? Would you please tell me, I thought that round thing with one wire hooked up to it was for the oil pressure. I took some picture of my engine bay, circle it to me if you see it. Thanks

Oh Jeez...
The little can with the wire is the oil pressure sender, the temp gauge sender is under it! Another sensor, another wire! The oil temp sender being refered to is in the oil pan.
I thought my list before would have cleared all this up! Get a copy of the FSM and study it!

The water temp sender is around the oil pressure sender.
The big thing with the can, with the red arrow pointing to it, the one you are talkign about, (being clear) is the oil pressure sending unit.
The blue dot is the approximate area where the other should be, but the OIL Pressure sender is covering it in the picture.

The shop manual dont tell you where that thing is. It just tells you to remove it and test it. Uh huh, I never knew abou the water temp sender because I never saw that thing. Anyway, thanks guys. Btw, is there anyway to keep the stock gauges working if I were to get aftermarket gauges or they die if I remove it?

I want to keep the stock one working even if I get the aftermarket one. The gauge will look funky without the oil psi and water temp gauge
