water pump removal

I'm trying to replace a leaking waterpump on a 91 FC NA. Do I need to removal the E-shaft pulleys to remove the H20 pump. I can't get the last bolt off. Am I missing something?

Technically, there might be some way of getting that last bolt out, but I just took the pulleys off anyway. Just be very careful, or the housing might come off also, then you will have to replace that gasket also. Take the pulleys off and take your time.

You only take off the front half of the main pulley (the first two belt rows), which is bolted to the rear half with four bolts. You don't need to touch the big centre bolt that holds the rear half onto the e-shaft.

Follow the instructions in the FSM Cooling System chapter for removing the water pump. Don't forget to align the timing marks before removing the pulley so that you reinstall it in the correct orientation.

NZ, what do you mean when you say to align timing marks befor removing the pulley? Aren't the bolts offset slightly so that it can go on in only one position? At least thats the case in my 90 FC3C n/a.

I always thought that re-aligning the marks was completley unnecessary becuase of the way the pully bolts on. I too had to remove the pulley in order to get the last bolt off on the waterpump housing to remove it, but when re-installing the pully it will only fit on one way due to the orientation of the bolts. You really can't **** up the timing when removing the pully.

That's interesting. I was reading the FSM procedure because I might pull my water pump off soon. I just figured the bolts were a normal square pattern and lining up the timing marks was so you didn't put it back on wrong. I wonder why the FSM specifically makes that point if it's not necessary?

Thanks for the replies. One more question: Now that I've removed the belts, how can I hold the pulleys to loosen the 4 bolts? I thought of holding the E-shaft bolt with a big socket, but I don't think I want to loosen this fitting.

i just put on my impact gloves and grabbed it with my ahnd.t he bolts shouldnt be torqued on too hard! aswell, if you put the socket on then hit it with a hammer the impating motion will loosen it even though the pulley moves a bit

Nope, one bolt is 15-degrees off...
