there is 4 10mm bolts that hold the fan on. you'll have to figure out a way to keep it still to break the bolts loose. also, i think that you need to remove the main pully to get the water pump off and on if i remember corretly

thx for reply
yeah excalty what u talking about,
i am looking for a way to keep the waterpump from rotating so i can losen the 4 bolts for the fan

any good suggestion for that??

and is the main pully the one right under the water pump pulley??
seems to me it's blocking the water pump's way out

how to remove the main pulley??
need air tool???

that's about it though right??
i already have the alternator off, after i remove the fan and main pulley, i should be able to remove the whole pump housing out right??

any other things should be replaced also??
i already got the new water pump and the 2 gaskets......other things

its been a while since ive done this. i think if you can have one person hold the waterpump still and another person break the nuts loose that will work.

the main pully is the big pulley at the very bottom. it is held on by 4 bolts. dont mess with the big one in the middle, it doenst need to come off. take off the 4 bolts, and then take the pulley off, it might be a little bti stuck, i used a crow bar and it poped right off with very little pressure

when i put things back together
pulley line mark has to line up right??

also i found that the 2 waterpump gaskets are really bad,
they are melted pretty much, and god damn it i had to spend an hour carving out those nasty gasket......(shouldn't call it gasket,........just stuff)
nasty

i really tried my best cleaning them up, but still there are some left,
it should be alright right?? as long as i put new gasket and seal them properly

i highly doubt the waterpump or gasket were ever replaced since 1989,
and i can see how much damage 13 yrs of rotary heat can do,
when i come to think about that,.............my poor original engine must be in "not good shape" i guess

back to garage now, still a long way to go,especially no one can give me a hand in the house

Make sure that you get ALL of the gasket off. Make sure the surface is very smooth, don't gouge the metal on the engine. Use good sealant for the water pump, whatever is recommended in the instructions or a Haynes manual. Check the water pump instructions or the Haynes manual, there is a tightening pattern for the bolts on the water pump. This is to make sure you don't warp the pump when you reinstall it. Also, a torque wrench is a good idea, you want the bolts tight, but not too tight. If you strip one your life is going to get very difficult.
hope this helps,
hanman

What caused you to change out waterpump?

What caused you to change the waterpump etc....

The reason that I ask is because on my rx-7, there was coolent coming out of the weep hole. The weep hole is a hole on the bottem of the water pump itself. If it is leaking this could be the sign of a more significant problem in your coolent system, like an internal o-ring that seals off your rotor housings went bad. I know this because It happened to my car and destroyed the engine. My solution was to just replace the pump gasket etc. Unfortunately it was the end of my engine all together.

oh yeah and.....

There is a tightening sequence for the bolts as well. I could post picture for you if you'd like.

On the fan nuts: Just stick a screwdriver b/t the studs to hold it in place. On the lower pulley: don't remove the large nut in the center. Remove the four smaller 10mm in head size bolts and then remove the pulley. Caution here: Before removing the pulleys this way, make a mark across the pulley face so you can put the pulley back using the same bolt holes. The bolt holes are NOT symmetrical. The bolts only go back in one way. If you have the pattern off, then all the holes WILL NOT ALIGN. Only goes back one way. If indeed you do decide to take off the large nut, you will find that the pulley has a woodruff key and therefore it will only go back on one way. The sad part is you have to be very careful removing the large bolt. Here is why: http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/pulley.htm save yourself the grief, just remove the four bolts instead, then the pulley. It'll all make sense when you do it.
