Mazda probably didn't want people to blow up the RX-8 like they did with the FD.

A metered air system with an actual measurement of the air flowing into the engine is far more tolerant of changes which increase airflow to the engine than a speed density system.

It's an off-the-shelf Denso system, that's all. It's very similar to what's in Toyotas and Subarus right now with the 32 bit ECU. The electronic throttle is also basically the same. There has been a general movement away from speed density systems in the past decade on Japanese cars that has coincided with the introduction of electronic throttles. For example, Honda and Toyota have switched away from speed density on their 4 cylinders. I suspect Denso sells the MAF, electronic throttle system, 32 bit ECU family, etc as a package to the OEM's. Mitsu ditched the old Karmann airflow meters and switched to a Denso hot wire MAF in the Evo X. The biggest MAF manufacturers are Denso, Hitachi, and Bosch. Denso typically uses the hotwire type which is found on many Japanese cars. Hitachi uses a hot film type which GM likes; Hitachi makes all the MAF sensors for GM. I'm not completely sure about the latest Bosch sensors.

The reason why you can't swap in a MAF sensor into an Rx-7 with a stock ECU is because there is nothing to control it. The stock ECU has to have circuitry that is meant to control a MAF sensor. A vane-type airflow meter is just a potentiometer; a MAF sensor is more complicated to control.

i loled, so true.... i think though, that cool unreliable cars actually end up making more money for the manufacturer. maybe its an american thing, but well we have a saying "its a piece of junk but i like it anyway"

you might be right about that, the rx8 uses the same MAF as most of the other mazdas. its just in a different housing/airbox.
