Vacuum Leaks!!!

So, lets hear some suggestions for finding vacuum leaks. I just replaced an engine and now can not get it to run much below 2000 rpms. I am thinking vacuum leaks seeing as how everything on the engine came from the previous engine and it was all working fine until an apex seal blew. I have check and rechecked all the hoses and cannot find anything that is not connected. I have in the past used carb. cleaner to find leaks but last time I did this I set the engine bay on fire in my 85 gsl. I got it out before any damage was done but it scared the crap out of me. So, I would prefer to stay away from the carb. cleaner method if at all possible.

Any suggestions for finding the leak?

Wow, I was gonna say carb cleaner but I guess thats out. How'd you set your engine on fire? There'd have to be somthing wrong with the engine setup (lose spark plug wires, extreamly hot exaust manifold, etc) wouldn't there?

what kind of setup: n/a or turbo? Did you replace the injector boss seals? What kind of prep work did you do to the manifold gasket surfaces? Use gaskets or RTV? Is the throttle linkage too tight and pulling the throttle open? ~rich

Well, the fire happened because there was a crack in the dist. cap which ignited the carb. cleaner. So, yes there was a problem but I sure don't want to ever discover any other problems like this.

I did not replace the injector seals and I am thinking that may be the problem or possibly may be leaking at the manifold gaskets.

Keep the ideas coming. I am going to remove the upper intake manifold this afternoon and take another look.

Thanks

haha why use something flammable!!

just get a jug of water, or even the garden hose and spray it into places where vac lines are. when the revs drop, you have found it!

advance sells a universal injector seal kit - $8.00 per injector - manifold gaskets had to be ordered, 1 day wait. ~rich
