URGENT: Is this water sensor really needed?

URGENT: Is this water sensor really needed?

Im replacing the waterpump housing in my '88 turboII with a water pump housing from an '89 turboII. The series5 waterpump housing is missing this water sensor and theres no where to screw it in. My '88 has two sensors: One in the back of the housing and the one circled in the picture below. The '89s housing only has one sensor: on the back of the housing. Can I get rid of the sensor by the thermostat? Will the car run crappy?

The car has the emissions removed and has the vacuum rail removed. In other words, all the vacuum lines were removed except for the vital ones. Don't know if this matters.

The top sensor is used to trigger the aux fan (used on A/C cars)

No picture, but your info is backwards. The S4 water pump only has the ECU thermosensor on the back. The S5 water pump has both the ECU thermosensor and the fan thermoswitch on the back. You must run the ECU thermosensor, but both have this anyway.

Try reloading the page. The picture works but sometimes it doesnt. My car's engine is all original. The waterpump housing has two sensors like the picture above. The series 5 one only has one sensor in the back. If it's for the auxillary fan, I'll go ahead and remove it since theres an electric fan on its way.

I still can't see a pic, but...

One sensor = S4
Two sensors = S5

Look at the pic on page E-14 of the S5 FSM if you don't believe me. If there is only one sensor, it is not an S5 pump. And that sensor is the ECU thermosensor, so do not remove it. It must be plugged back in.

my 88 jdm engine has the one he shows on top and two on the rear. a unknown one to the right of the thermosensor that looks like the temp sensor that goes on the rad. any one know about that one? does 88 jdm = 3 sensors?

My S5 water housing only has 1 sensor, and that's all you should need. I would think (though not certain) that you can split the signal from the sensor and send it through both wires. Might work might not, but you do need the ECU sensor.

Okay, slight correction. If your S5 did not come with the optional stock e-fan, it will only have one sensor (and probably one blanking bung) on the back of the water pump. That is for the ECU thermosensor. You need that, so don't touch it (and certainly don't splice any wires!).

If you have two sensors on the back of the water pump, its S5. S4's had the fan temp switch on top of the thermostat instead.

My 88TII has 2 sensors and it was made October of '87 and my 87 TII also has 2 sensors and it was made before june of '87 bot are S4 and both have 2 sensors. My 88 had a rebuild but the 87 is the stock engine.

no but it will keep it from starting in cold weather and could cause other various things im not aware of. but i know positively that it will keep it from starting in cold weather.

I'll say it again. The S4's fan thermoswitch is on top of the thermostat cover just down from the filler cap. The S5's e-fan thermoswitch is on the back of the water pump beside the ECU thermosensor.

Whatever series you have, if your car came with the stock e-fan, you'll have a thermoswitch. If your car didn't come with the stock e-fan, you won't have a thermoswitch.
