do NOT get the rebuild kit from GPopShop, even though it says it'll work on our cars. There were only 3 pieces of the whole kit that seemed to work, and even then, one of them (the lock nut on the compressor wheel) failed with the expected, disasterous results to the turbo.

I could not disagree more. Gpopshop rebuilt an old turbo i had for a very reasonable price.....like 80 bucks or something. They even painted it for me.....and replaced fins because of some shaft play. I disassembled it afterwards to port it and threw it back together. This turbo has performed flawlessly for over a year and a half. At least check out their website and give them a call.

Yup. I wouldn't trust myself to balance something that will see 100,000+rpms

I rebuild my own stock s5 turbos. On my last one I bought the rebuild kit off ebay (not Gpopshop). It had all the necessary seals and bearings. I also bought a 360-degree thrust bearing kit and dynamic seal. Total cost of the kits was about $85. The rotating assembly has to be balanced which cost me an additional $60 locally. Porting my own wastegate obviously was at no cost, just time and patience. I bought a used turbo on ebay that had a t-04s cold side wheel and housing so I installed that bringing my total cost of the rebuild to about $175. Not bad for a hybrid rebuild.

What modifications did you do to make the compressor wheel and housing fit? And what did you get the 360 bearing from?

I am suprised finding a rebuild kit has been a problem for so long with little solution. I guess people just upgrade when it gets to this point.
