turbo size help

I am looking for an aftermarket turbo to replace my stock S4 charger. I have a discount with Turbonetics, so I am going to be using that brand for the charger. Now I just need help on the sizing.

Just like all turbo owners, I want the best of both worlds, no lag, and high boost. But I do understand that I can't have my cake and eat it too.

My list of mods is;
Greddy Profec B
Walbro 225
A-pexi SAFC
Greddy BOV (openair)
3" mandrel bends from turbo to tail pipe, no cat, apexi dunk muffler
EGR, ACV block offs
FCD
intake/air box removed
no AC
no PS
no air pump
med street port
3mm apex seals

This car is my daily driver, although I walk to work. when I do take the car out, I spend 90% of the time blasting up and down the mountain roads, and canyons in the area. So most of my driving and boost requirements are found between 3500rpm and redline. I am currently looking at this map...

well you have 2 options... you can build a hybrid using your stock exhaust housing and manifold. buy installing the t04 compresser housing and wheel onto the front. this is much easier and cheaper and should get you probbaly up to 300hp or so at the wheels.

you might wana find an S5 turbo and manifold and start with that. better then your S4. either way port the crap outa your wastegate.

or you can go with a full t04 turbo + new manifold + external wastegate + custom oil/water lines + custom down pipe. which will be good for 400+. but you'd really want a new ECU for that as well.

you will need bigger injectors for either. if you are staying with the s-afc I would get four 720cc injectors.

Your best bet is to call or e-mail turbonetics and tell them your motor, what has been done to it ans what you are expecting from the turbo. They will be able to tell you exactly what you need. The possibilities on selecting a turbo are huge. So many factors to consider it would be best to do that.

What is needed to build this hybrid? Does the T04 compressor housing mount directly to the stock center section, or do I need to get a T04 center. I was wanting to run a cermec BB center, and would like to retain that wish. Is there any company out there that makes the kit, I would love to use my discount with turbonetics, and get my parts, rather then pay $$$ for something that I can get.

that would work great if you had a piston engine... nobody knows crap about rotarys. the sizing is way different.

it bolts to the stock center. all you need is a to4 compression housing, compresser wheel, and backing plate. couple hundred $$ in parts.

other wise you are going full t04 and spending a couple thousand.

Well, since it bolts right to my stock center section, looks like I will be going with the hybrid. I am currently running a S4 turbo and manifold, will these parts also bolt right onto a S5 when I dig one up?

Now that I am setteled on what I am doing, I need to look at sizing. What would you all reccomend for a mid to top end turbine and housing for use with a S4, and later a S5(?)

I also see in the catalog they have a difference between the backing plates.
Dia-cast vs. Billet
and for the seals
Dynamic vs. carbon

What is the difference between the seals, I know that diacast is a a cast piece, and the billet is a machined part. But I have no clue about the seals, what are they advantages of both, et all.

Sounds like a hybrid might be right for you. Good choice. Yes you can swap your new center section and compressor housing to a S5 housing at a later point in time.

I wouldn't be really hung up on using turbonetics for a discount unless it's like 50% or something. Give Bryan at BNR supercars a call. He has a banner at the top of the page. I spoke with him extensively about a hybrid turbo about a year ago and he seemed very knowledable. I have also read many good things about him, although I have not purchased from him because I decided, for my applicaion and desires, to get a "full" turbo setup.

It seems that most people running a hybrid run an h-3 wheel with a 60-1 wheel being the next step on the compressor side. Both do well for the Rx7 Usually the turbin side is just clipped (about 15 degrees) to help with boost control. Bryan can put a "P" trim turine wheel in, or at least he did. This is usually the recomended wheel for street 7's. I don't know if he still offer this. At the time of my discussions with him on this he actually recomended against it, saying that the material which would need to be removed from the turbine housing could cause it to crack. You'll need to ask him.

Hope this helps a bit. Perhaps someone who actually has a hybrid can recomend a bit better, but I'd at least have a conversation with Bryan based on what I've read about him.

The reason I am stuck on Turbonetics is the fact that my best friend works for them, and I can get his discount of cost + 10% wich tends to sit around 50% of msrp. If I can get it for cheaper and build it myself, I will do that, if not, I will buy from someone like BNR. IF only their site would load :-\

Hey Fellas.

I just want to inform you guys that you do not have to replace the S4 turbo with a S5 turbo and manifold. My opinion on the S4 turbo/manifold is that it can be modified to be better than the S5 . Let me know if you have any questons. bnrsupercars@aol.com
