Turbo Rebuild- Oil in intake

First off, I have a 88TII, Rebuilt motor with no emissions (1.6kmiles), Rebuilt Turbo (1.6kmiles), Full Dual Racing beat exhaust, The Home Depot TID, RB FCD, Walbro Fuel pump, and TB MOD.

Ok guys, it seems the (carbon seal? on the) turbo is pushing oil into my intercooler/intake area. It isnt too much, if i pull it all out there is a layer on the insides of the piping, but not enough to pour oil out and measure anything. I been noticing it for awhile now, it was a fresh rebuild and I had ran the PCV directly to the TID and no where else. So atfirst I was thinking this may be the case, which it still could be... I noticed now that after I boost 9lbs constantly for a few runs, when i let the car idle, it starts to burn smoke and it gradually begins burning more and more untill there is CLOUDS of smoke. If I take off driving it goes away though... It doesn't smoke while or after boosting, only when idle.

I am geussing that it is the actual turbo pushing oil into the intake/intercooler over the PCV system. If you guys think it is the PCV doing this, I have made a catch can with 2 nipples on it and a breather tank. Will hooking up the two PCV nipples be enough to pull the blow by? Or should I have some sort of vacuum as well?

Any thoughts would be appreciated, also the turbo isn't ported yet. It is creeping to 9lbs and then I let off. I am planning on pulling the turbo and porting the wastegate soon, just want to know if I should be ordering a carbon seal so I can fix it all at once, thus why I would like some opinions on the matter.

Thanks,
Dane

No one has any opinions? I geuss I will just have to clean it all up, install the catch can and boost the crap out of it and recheck for oil. LOL

If any suggestions come up, let me know :P

the old stockker on my 87 did the same thing, check the shaft play on your side to side, and in and out........I almost garuntee its a little worn and that is causing the seepage.

However I wouldn't be THAT concerned (check the shaft play though, you could have a little grenade sitting on your motor) keep an eye on it and watch your oil levels carefully

I would rule out bad turbo of it's been rebuilt by a pro(not your own garage).

One thing most turbo rebuilders neglect to tell you is that the stock hitachi unit has a built in oil restrictor. The turbo does not like high oil psi that the engine uses.

My own rebuilder told me he had to remove that restrictor to do a real cleaning so it was pulled and destroyed during removal.

So My turbo no longer had a restrictor. I blew smoke like a **** with the stock inlet piping.

I bought some AN SS lines and fabbed a feed line with an adapter which reduced the ID of the line to help restrict.
Smoking is gone......

If you do a search under my name I answered a thread about making an oil feed line and I had some part numbers in there.

BTW. From my own experience the oil will go out the hotside first because that seal is not a full seal like the front compressor.

If your getting it out the front then your on the verge of ruining that seal which will require a rebuild.

Take a look at my reply in this thread and see if it solves the problem.

OK thanks for the replies guys. I do have shaft play on the turbo and it wasn't rebuilt by a pro. I did the rebuild myself and made sure to follow Dales instructions to a T. I had no real problems and I made sure everything was as it should be. I have rebuilt my motor though and assumed I could do a turbo. Maybe I was wrong.

At first I was a little concern about the shaft play, but when I asked on the forum I got replies saying a little shaft play is normal. It is a little side to side shaft play, no up and down shaft play.

Now, what causes the side to side shaft play? I would think the bearings but they were all replaced. IF there is something that I could have done wrong to make side to side play please let me know and I Will try to rebuild it again!

If you dont succeed the first time, try again!

just wear...

you may have put new bearings in it, but was the shaft replaced?

either way if it was...those babies SPIN (upwards of 50,000RPM) they are gonna get a little worn and a little sloppy after a while.

If you drive the car like a granny all the time and never boost it at all then your turbo might last for a long long time, but the things not there to look at right - hehe

Well the turbo did have 157k miles on it before I rebuilt it... So I geuss it was time. So I geuss the shaft was worn out and I should replace that? or would I be better off just going with a new turbo... If so, I geuss I should shoot for an upgrade, where is the best hybrid prices? Thanks
