Turbo to NA
So I'm sure this would be frowned upon by most, but I'm thinking it would be the most effective way to get my car streetable. I have my 87 TII would bet that the motor is toast cause it does smoke pretty good. So I was thinking about finding a running NA motor. I have read through some NA to turbo threads, and I can gather that I need ecu, harness, motor, modify front section of exhaust. To me with my very limited funds this is maybe my best approach. I would sell the turbo stuff to help fund the swap, and still have the turbo tranny and rear diff. I couldn't find anyone that had done this so I guess flame away cause I know it's morally wrong.

You don't need the ECU or harness or any of the NA electronics. Presumably you are swapping it in without any regard for emissions, in which case all the important stuff will plug right in. Remember, TIIs are NA until boost happens. The TII ECU will thus run the NA engine just fine.
Why not just get a cheap J-spec TII engine and bolt it in though?

I am a little leery about buying a JDM motor, not to many places will warranty the rotary. I have bought two JDM H22A's one from a importer in the Canada and one from a importer in states. Canadian motor was trash, and the state one ran but it was still worn out. I don't want to end up being another guy that got a rebuildable core from japan.

smoke is not the end of the world... Could just be an oil seal. do a little troubleshooting before doing something extreme like motor swapping.
if motor is toast I would suggest rebuild or sell the car as needing a rebuild (can get a good amount for it if rest of car is good) and buy a good n/a.
trying to do a non-similar swap will far more headache and $$ than you expect. a rebuild will probably be faster, cheaper, and less stressful.
Cheers

I paid $850 for mine a couple of months about, you can ask for pic of the compression test just to make sure you have a good engine. Had no problem with the engine yet. I have a small vacuum on the intake manifold. (Waiting for winter to fix it, i'm going to do a streetport and rebuild it)
