Turbo Issues
So, a while back, Relvinnian was riding in my car with me and he diagnosed that when I was on boost, it smelled as if I was burning oil, so he figured that the oil seals in my turbo were leaking. We've never really had a chance to look into the issue until today when we FINALLY got the turbo pulled off. And after looking it over, he can't seem to find any oil in the intake or exhaust sides of the turbo. So now we're wondering if it IS actually the turbo that is going bad. Is there any other way to see if it is the oil seals going bad? Or if anyone has some input as to what might be the issue, please give some input. Maybe it's the actual engine going bad, rather than the turbo... Thanks in advance.

if the turbo was bad, you've seen smoke or smell smoke even when the car is idling. you should check for some other source of leaks or anything like that......do you see smoke when the car is idling or even under boost, this might be hard, look behind if you see any smoke.

ok since we're sorta on topic anyway.. what are common problems for T2's or 3rd gens when it comes to the turbo setup... as in the turbo being the problem.. i've been pushed and shoved to wanting an n/a but i'm also hungry for power... so the t2's always a + anybody?

From what I can remember, yes, Sometimes there was smoke. But not all the time. If I was raced her or drove her real hard, yeah, she'd smoke some out the exhaust, but not constant. If I started her up right now, there wouldn't be any smoke (if you can tell smoke from hot gas in cold air). But it smells like burning oil from INSIDE the cabin when raced or pushed hard.

when i had a blown turbo, it wouldnt smoke unless i got in the boost real good and then came back down to idle. it would smoke a little bit while i was boosting and let all that oil into the exhaust. then i'd come back down to idle and it would have to sit there and burn off before it would stop smoking.
if your car is smoking without seeing any boost, it may be the oil seals in in your engine. if the exhaust smokes only when boosting and idling down after boosting, you have a blown turbine. probably nothing more nothing less.

i guess above all, there really arent any problems that happen with EVERY SINGLE turboII or 3rd gen rx7. it really all depends on how you take care of things. (and obviously, these turbo cars need more attention than the non turbos)
