OK I pulled the turbo off, and it has no front to back shaft play, but it has a little up and down (a LITTTLE). But the things that I am most worried about is the exhuast wheel, since it is missing the chunks out of the fins. And the huge cracks in the exhaust housing.

So as the title says, is this turbo usable or is it just junk?

in the second picture, that crack above the oval-shaped hole doesn't look too healthy.

That picture is a little misleading, because the crack that is going inbetween the two ports is actually the biggest, and it is like a 1/4-1/2 inch long. The one that you are talking about is less of a worry to me (but I am worried about both of them)

Is the turbo possibly from a car that had blown its engine? Ive seen engines that have lost apex seals through the turbine housing and it has caused chips on the turbine wheel.

The cracking is probably from the manifold seeing too much heat, too soon. Like ragging on the car shortly after startup or something. Im not saying you did it...Just that it has probably been done before to that turbo.

my turbo has cracks bigger than that, but it still bossted, probably cause the cracks on the exhasust side, but after a while the crack got bigger and i started getting exhaust fumes in the cabin. but the turbo is being removed and swapped with a bigger turbo as we speak.

Well I just traded for the car not ever 3 days ago. So I really don't know anything about it, but supposedly it has a rebuilt motor (700 miles ago) with a blown coolant seal. And I am pretty sure that I have the old motor core that came out of the car, and it isn't blown. But it does feel like it has low compression.

Ohhh yes, and could I weld the crack until I have the money to buy a new bigger turbo?

dont worry about the cracks in the middle of the two runners in the second picture. the only cracks you have to worry about are the ones on the outside, and you only have that small one at the top, i think you'll be ok.

the cracks on the seperator of those two runners probably wont matter much because the exhaust is still enclosed, the outside cracks can let some pressure out...

Ouch. As long as it doesn't start letting out jet flames or exhaust gases, it should be OK. I know several people who have ghetto welded cracks in turbos and driven them for a long time very hard, but the ones on the outside are definitely your concern.

The turbo is f#cked, I put the vacume cleaner (a wet dry vac) onto the DP side, and I don't think it is putting out enough air to even think about keeping up with the engine a WOT.

So I have to find a new turbo if I want it to boost. But the down side I don't have the money.

Ah, the lack of money.....yes.....a common situation. Maybe you can do a temporary conversion to N/A? Join the dark side?

Wait I thought the dark side was turbo charged you know snail power.

So wouldn't that mean that I was joining the force again.

Maybe I should go get a job, I mean I have a TII and no job. That isn't going to last long

It would cost damn near as much to have a downpipe fabbed up to fit the stock TII exhaust manifold that you could send that turbo in to BNR and have it rebuilt. Or upgraded.

I'm not makeing a turbo into an NA, that's just stupid.

And if I will probably end up spending the money on an upgrade when I get enough.

yeah i kinda HAD to buy exhaust cause mine was all shitty. the exhaust is the only thing i consider a "mod" on this car really. but i think by "keeping it stock" i meant not boosting it or spraying it. i'd love to spray it but all of that stuff costs so much
all this "modding" an NA is kinda redundant for all the work it requires for such little gains
