turbo experts please help
i might be getting this turbo kit for my 88 n/a. lots of people on here said i would be find under 8 psi without the intercooler. but my friend went to this shop that knows rotories. they said it could be bad for my motor. they said it might kill it. they also said that it wont take well. if my timing is slightly off at any time. it will kill my engine. what do u guys think? do u think i should be all set? it has the following Hitachi recent REBUILD turbo (about 2000 miles on it)
turbo exhaust manifold (from stock TII)
Custom exhaust Addapter (that makes N/A posible to be turbo)
Vortec FMU 10:1
all nessesary gas lines
AutoMeter Ultra-Light boost gauge
all nessesary vacum lines
all the exhaust gaskets
Down pipe with O2 sensore molded in (screws right out)
Custom Oil adapter with all nessesary oil lines
Custom Oil return line
All nessesary clamps
Boost pipe with crushed 1g eclipse BOV on it (very loud)
all nuts and bolts that are needed

I dont know tons about turbo's but my buddy is an expert.. and what he did was go to the wrecker and get a front intercooler out of an old volvo for dirt cheap... It much larger than the stock ones...and its front mounted to you will get better results... i believe there are instructions on the forum somewhere on how to do that... !!

In my opinion I would not waste your money putting a turbo on a N/A block, instead you should save your money and either get a TII or a TII engine to transplant into your N/A. I would think you would have more prolbems and headaches than its worth. The turbo engine is totally different than the N/A engine for reasons. Just my opinion, good luck with whatever path you deside to take.

it can work and people have done it. but you have to be sure that the timing can retard under boost and that you are adding extra fuel under boost. if you are just going to bolt the turbo on and connect the piping and not address these other important issues then detonation and premature engine failure is likely. low boost systems 6psi or lower usually without intercoolers can work but it is not a bolt on. you have probaly read some of the horror stories guys have posted about there turbo cars blowing up motors and these cars were designed for a turbo. just be careful and ask alot of questions from the person selling the kit. the turbo II engine retrofit may be a better long term option.

I'm going to be doing that same kit for my 88GXL as well. I've weighed the options and this is a more economical way of adding more power. I understand I could also add NOS but there is the added bonus with NOS of it running out. ^_- I'm taking things VERY VERY slow because of the reasons tims stated earlier. I'll post pics and some info on what happens when the project goes underway. I'll get the parts more likely than not next week so we'll see how it goes.
Peace,

Yep - biggest thing about adding a turbo to any car is proper timing of boost, fuel delivery, spark, etc... You might as well get an aftermarket ECU or a turbo & chip combo specifically designed for your NA car. The chip would have poper fuel maps, timing, etc..
Note several guys around here have added superchargers to their GTU and GTU-S NAs. You might want to inquire about their experiences.
