Question turbo

What do I need besides the turbo and man from a 89+ to put it on my 87? Will it all bolt up? And will the turbo hold up for boosting 12psi consistently?

12psi boost in the 6-8000 rpm area is beyond the compressor's air flow range for any of the stock turbos, weather it be the S4 or S5 turbo. If you want to run 12psi boost you need a turbo with a larger compressor on it. otherwise you are just adding heat and stress to your engine, 10psi is the limit of effiency of the stock turbo

I hit 10 on my s4 turbo now, so I figured that 12 would be ok on the s5. When you are talking about the compressor, its the housing right. If so then what larger compressor will bolt up. I have a T04, but Im not sure what parts will work.

the S4 and S5 turbo's have different exhuast sides, the compressor are close enough to exactly the same that it don't make a difference, yes T04 compressor and compressor housing can go on the front, but you have to ask yourself how much HP do you really want to make, cause the problem with the factory turbo's is the exhuast sides are too small and choke the flow at anything over 300-320HP

no don't want 300+ just close to that will be fine. I want to get a boost controller and keep it at 12psi. I have considered putting the garret t04 on, but I dont think that I will have the funds for the whole conversion. That is with all the fuel and safty mods.
Ok so I need to get the series 5 turbo for the larger exhaust side, then use the t04 compressor and housing. After that would it need to be balanced, or does it just bolt up in a way.
Sorry Im new to the turbos

hwo do you have aim? Im interested in this set up, and you seem to be the only one with the info.
my aim is shepezroc

Thanks for your help

you are going to want a FMIC for running over 10 psi too. I'm sure with a TID, cone filter, and full exhaust you could hold 12psi with the stock turbo, but it'll be getting pretty hot and loosing efficiency, boost will drop off with stock TID cause it's too restrictive.

how much boost do you run scott? On a cool day my turbo will hit 9-10 no prob in 3rd gear, but I want to have some controll over it and I want 12 now. Yeah I will do the fmic and prob still get the 720 secondaries and get a boost controller.

I'm running 8psi in 1-3 with a manual boost controller but it creeps to 9-10 psi in 4th, I'm running stock airbox and TID, it was creeping higer with my K&N cone on so I took it off.

wouldn't porting your wastegate and controlling it with the boost controller help with that boost creep.

the previous owner of my T2 ported the wastegate and rebuilt the turbo while he had it off. so on it i have cone intake, 2.5" downpipe, no cats and RP 50mm catback. in any gear i've floored it in i DON'T hit fuel cut. now, i feel the diameter piping on the catback isn't too much larger over stock, if i threw on the N1 catback i have on my n/a, the boost might increase (much larger piping). i don't have a true boost gauge, but should be getting one this week. then i'll be able to see what i'm running.

according to the stock gauge it goes about 3/4 of the way up. from what i've learned on here thats about 5psi maybe? which is less than stock.
