trying to beef up alternator

Well my alternator seems to be on its way out so I want to have it rebuilt and upgraded. I called a few places and one place said they don't make any kits for it to be upgraded but they might be able to get a "delco" aftermarket one on. They said they have a 105amp one or a 140 amp one. The 105 will cost me $170 and the 140 will cost me $280. What does the stock one have? Anyone have any better ideas? I know the stock ones are weak and I don't even have a radio in yet and I'm having a problem. I plan to have a stereo(possible 500watt amp), s-afc, turbo timer, gauges, boost controller, etc put in soon. Thanks alot. Oh and what does the FD one put out? Thanks alot.

get one off a 3rd gen. they are supposed to be way better than the 2nd gen ones. i think someone posted a link here a while back on how to do the swap. try a search to find out. i looked on car-parts.com and FD alternators are like 150 bucks so thats not too bad.

Put an FD alternator on. All you need to do is change the pully and a little wiring. As I recall, they are 100A units.

Big Aaron's right on the money. Being a previous FC owner, and knowing that the FC only puts out 60A's vs. 100 A's from the FD...and all you'll need to do is change the pulley(just need an impact gun) and the wiring...piece of cake!

The S4 alternator put out 70A, the S5 80A, the FD 100A. Do a search, the how-to links have been posted dozens of times.

I'm looking to put a 200 Amp Alternator on my next engine. I'm going to have a few High-current drawing accessories, and overkill is beatiful.

Might wind up with a 140 amp though. I'll have to see the requirements.

On a similar note, has anyone notcied Summit's price on the Meziere street electric water pump? $288! I think its time for an order.... (yes I know I need the mounting kit)

Not in the stock location...
But my motor isn't going to fit without custom work either...

Go to "my car and mods" and click on the link about the alternator.

Essentially, you have to make 2 "jumper" wires about 6" long. Male spade connector on one end, female on the other. The one to the black wire (black with stripe?) goes on the top connector on the alternator.

You have to find a v-belt pulley for a 17mm shaft or drill out your existing one (and the spacer.)

Ok for now I'm getting a S5 alternator. Is it a direct fit for my S4 though?
