Troubleshooting Trailing Coil...

So my trailing coils aren't firing. My leading coils do fire. I read through a bunch of threads on coils not firing, and decided to check the ground. I'm just checking to see If I'm ohming out the right connector...

From descriptions I've heard, I'm thinking that the ground for the trailing coil is the connector to the right of the one I'm holding. I ohm it out and get 4v on one both wires.

Now for the connector I'm holding in the pic... What ground is this? I ohm it out and get 12v with the key in the On position. It's connected to this guy...

well, not at the moment at least. I'm new to electrical troubleshooting, so bear with me. What is the little black box on the end of the wire? And where exactly does the trailing coil ground to?

Thanks again,
~Todd

Simple question, does your tach work?

Also, the pic isn't showing up...

nope, tach is dead. I checked for spark, and the trailing coil is def. not firing. I'm thinking the ignitor may have blown due to an unfortunate battery incident, but I want to check all my bases just to be sure...

And I can see the pics

The trailing coil uses its housing to make the ground. You know, the part that is held to the chassis with three bolts. Don't ever ground the black bullet or you will destroy the coil/ignitor assy.

Hailers, my hero as always.

Now I steal your picture...

I was under the impression that one of the wires in the left connector (the one with 2 wires) was a ground. In coil troubleshooting threads, people are always saying to check if you have 12v to ground. Am i just supposed to check the ingitor housing itself then?

It's almost a given that the ignitor is grounded if the three bolts that attach it to the chassis are there. Heck, I even just layed the coil on the studs without nuts and the coil fired. The only time it did not fire was when I had the coil assy laying on top of some rags.

You should make sure the two black/yellow wires have 12v when the key is to ON. The Blue/Red is a feedback signal to the ECU.

The Brown/Yellow is the Select signal from the ECU.

The Blue/Yellow is the Trigger from the ECU

The Yellow/Blue is for the check connector to check the rpms. Never ever ground that one.

All that above is for the Trail.

There is one Black/Yellow wire that you will see going to a black square thing that is bolted to the chassis. That's the condenser for the Black/Yellow wires for the lead and trail coils.

If the black/yellow wires have 12v and the coil is buttoned down.....then the thing should work if the other wires are going to the ECU and not cut. No reason to think they are cut.

I bought a trail coil assy a couple of years ago from the wrecker for twenty or less. It's the one in the jpg.

k cool. I have ECU signal, which I'd better since I just replaced the thing. Not sure about the 12v to ground, I'll check on that when I get home, but I'm just going to go ahead and pick up the ebay special for $15.

Oh, and I ohmed out the coils themselves, and they were within spec (1.0 ohms).

Thanks for the pic. I have the FSM and Haynes manuals, it's just really dirty under the hood of the Bond-o beast, hard to tell what I'm looking at and what goes where. Clean as you go...

Thanks guys, got it fixed. The trailing ignitor was deadm replaced the ignitor and coils and now I have trailing spark and my tach is alive

Now I just have to combat the 3500-3800 hesitation
