Transmission return spring question.

Hey guys,

I have been searching last couple of days for some info on this, but so far I have just been able to confirm that this spring exists, and it can be replaced when the transmission is out. Anyways, my transmission is gonna be out next week, and I'm wondering if anyone knows where this spring is located and if it is relatively simple to replace. Is there any disassembly of the transmission required or is it as simple as drop the transmission, remove the old spring, put in new spring, and replace transmission. I am referring to the spring that centers the shifter upon being removed from gear. I have an 88 TII.

Thanks,

Greg

i think if you remove the shifter from inside you can look into the tail of the tranny and see it im not sure how you replace it....check the haynes manual or the fsm

Sorry to bring this one back...but I am attempting this right now and need to know if I am missing something. The whole extension housing on the transmission doesn't need to be separated from the transmission for the spring to be replaced correct? I am assuming the "tail housing" refers to the part that houses the shifter, spring, etc. I want to make sure I don't do any unnecessary dismantling of the tranny. Thanks in advance. And if you have any links to a write-up or something that would be awesome. I searched a couple times but couldn't find anything specific.

Found a very good write-up on here a few minutes ago. It is for NA I believe...but I imagine that TII is similar.

You pretty much do have to remove the tail housing to replace just the spring.

Rebuilding a whole tranny is a... bit... more complicated than replacing one spring.
