MO Tranny question!

Just a noob question I assume, but until I press the clutch to the floor I can something in the transmission spinning rapidly, I'm not sure if it's a bad sign, but it's rather annoying. Again, with my foot not on the clutch I hear a spinning sound that is quite loud, but after I ress the clutch down all the way the sound goes away. Any and all help would be gratly appreciatd, thanks in advanced guys!

No. It's your car. Research the function of a throwout bearing with google and use youtube to listen to the sounds associated with one which is failing. If you determine you do indeed have a failing throwout bearing you might want to consider a full clutch kit. The throwout bearing itself a cheap part but replacement requires removing the exhaust, driveshaft, and transmission. Replacement of the pressure plate, clutch disc, throwout bearing and pilot bearing is recommended. Read the FSM for more detail on the procedure.

No. it is not.

With the clutch engaged( pedal NOT pressed) the throwout bearing and pilot bearing aren't being used, and are unlikely to cause noise. however the input shaft bearing of the transmission is spinning.

With the clutch disengaged( pedal pressed to the floor) the pressure plate rides on the throw out bearing, and the input shaft is stationary riding on the pilot bearing inside the E-shaft.

It IS( at least very likely) your input shaft bearing. which will require pulling the tranny and then partial dis assembly.

Update: While driving if I put the clutch in and keep the car in gear I hear the same spinning noise. Original porblem still stands. Plan on buying new clutch and re-building tranny.

Moving down the road, or at a stand still? we have established you'll be pulling the tranny for the input shaft bearing, and a clutch job will be done at the same time, so whether the throwout bearing is making noise or not negated by the fact that it wil be replaced with the new clutch. however, if your tranny has another bearing issue, it's important to figure it out while you can still drive, and therefore test, the car. wouldn't you hate to spend all the money, and even worse... time, putting in a new input shaft bearing and clutch kit, only to could have spend another hour on the inside fixing another bearing, or syncro problem?
